표현의 아름다움,

자연 속 ‘감성’을 스케치 하다

군포의 작은 마을, 납덕골을 벽화마을로 탈바꿈 시킨 김형태 작가. 그는 자연을 벗 삼고 많은 이들의 감성을 통해 아름다움을 표출해 내는 진정한 화가다. 복잡한 도심을 벗어나 자연의 한적함을 온몸으로 체감하며 작품 활동에 여념이 없는 그는 ‘벽화’를 통해 내면의 성찰을 이끌어 내기도 하고, 관객들로 하여금 깊은 감동을 선사하기도 한다. 

낡은 담장 위로 새겨진 ‘변화의 떨림’

발길이 닿는 곳이면 어김없이 붓을 집어 들었다. 스케치 여행을 하던 중 처음 만난 군포의 한 작은 마을은 이내 김형태 작가의 마음을 사로잡았다. 그는 동네 어귀에 있던 방앗간을 개조해 조그마한 작업실을 만들었다. 지금의 ‘수리산 갤러리’다. 

아름다운 풍경과 순수함을 머금은 사람들, 이 모든 것들은 김 작가에게 창작의 불씨가 되었다. 동네를 거닐다 문득 허름한 담장을 아름답게 꾸며야겠노라 다짐했던 그는 2008년 가을, 마을 주민들에게 이를 제안했고, 흔쾌히 수락한 주민들의 기대를 한 몸에 받으며 벽화작업을 시작하기에 이른다.

동료 화가들에게 좋은 취지를 알리고 동참하겠다는 의사를 전달받기는 했으나 예기치 못한 문제에 직면했다. 바로 만만치 않았던 물감 값을 충당하기 어려웠던 것. 김 작가는 주민들과 함께 ‘아름다운 마을 가꾸기 기금 모금을 위한 음악회’를 열었고 그렇게 모인 돈 200만원을 가지고 본격적인 벽화작업에 돌입했다. 

10여 명의 화가들과 함께 직접 밑그림을 그리고 디자인하고 색을 연출했다. 그리고 이듬해 벽화가 완성됐다. 마을 주민들뿐만 아니라 등산을 위해 마을을 지나던 등산객들의 입소문을 타면서 마을이 유명세를 타게 됐다. 그로인해 30가구 남짓의 조용한 마을은 관광객들의 발길로 활기를 되찾았다. 

‘마음의 풍요’로부터 비롯된 정신

그림이 결코 내게 있어 부나 명예가 될 수 없는 이 곤궁한 풍토 속에서 나는 누구도 아닌 나를 자연 속에 묻는다. 여러 모양의 삶을 정리하고 색채 속으로 몰입해 사는 이유가 내 몫으로 오는 흔치 않는 소득이라면 그것은 무엇보다 사람이 사람을 이해하고 사랑하는 법을 가르치며 정서적인 공감대를 얻는 마음의 풍요로움이라고 할 수 있다. 

색채의 신비함에 도취하여 나는 나와 나의 현재를 버리며 옛 삶과도 과감히 단절하고 있다. 남는 건 몇 점의 그림이지만 이마저 버리게 된다면 너무 잔인하다고 하겠지만 그림이 자신을 치장하는 허영이 되지 않기를 간절히 바랄 뿐이다. 어느 좋은 날, 나는 나의 영혼을 발견하기 위해 지금 색채로 가득 찬 자연 속으로 캔버스를 짊어지고 여행을 떠난다면 그것에 비할 바가 어디 있을까. (작가 노트 중에서)

물질이 지배하는 현대사회. 그 속에서 가식을 훌훌 털어내고 가슴 속 진실과 대면하고 있는 김형태 작가는 자연의 아름다움을 거짓 없이 있는 그대로 받아들인다. 그리고 가감 없이 화폭에 담아내며 관객과의 소통을 이끌어 낸다. 그것은 곧 작가 자신의 정신과도 부합하는 것이다. 내면에 잠재된 아름다움을 표출해 내며 작가로서의 본분에 최선을 다하고 있는 그는 새로운 시각언어를 탄생시키고 있는지도 모른다. 그가 추구하는 자유스러움과 멋스러움은 작품에 고스란히 전달되어지고 특유의 개성으로 자신만의 영역을 확대해 나가고 있음이 분명해 보인다. 

가공되지 않은 것에서 느껴지는 순수함과 맑음은 그가 표현해 내고자 하는 것과 일맥상통하는 부분이다. 자연의 절대성을 느낄 수 있도록 하며 서정적이고 은은한 향취를 머금고 있는 그의 작품들은 자연과 더불어 살아가는 인간의 삶을 단적으로 그려내기도 한다. 

이렇듯, 그가 언제나처럼 맑은 심상으로 자연의 향연을 선보이며, 솔직하고 담백한 작품으로 2월 11일~2월 18일까지 평촌에 있는 새중앙교회 전시실에서 [그대에게 그 향기를]이란 주제를 통해 그의 6번째 개인전을 준비하고 있다.

Sketches "Sensibility" in Nature

There's a small village in Gunpo, Napdeokgol is transformed into the village of murals by the artist Kim Hyeongtae. He is the true painter who expresses the beauty through the sensibility of many people communing with nature. He is being absorbed in his painting works, feeling quietness of the nature with every fiber of his body. He draws inner introspection through Murals, or presents audiences with deep impression.

The Quiver of Change Carved on the Old Wall

He always takes up a paintbrush wherever his feet lead him. A small village in Gunpo where artist Kim is a stranger here himself captured his heart while making a sketch trip. He made a small workroom by remodeling a mill located at the entrance of the village. This is the "Mountain Suri Art Gallery". The people who are keeping beautiful scenery and purity in their minds, all these things became the source of creation for him. One day he was rambling around the village, he made his mind to decorate the humble wall beautifully, which in the autumn of 2008 he suggested to the village people, who accepted it without hesitation, and he started doing the mural work, being held in all the expectations of the village people. 

I told the purpose to fellow painters, from whom I received the intention to take part in the mural work. But he was faced with a unanticipated problem, which was the cost of paints, which was hard for him to meet. So, he and the village people held the concert in order to raise funds for "Creating Beautiful Village", from which we saved two million won, with which we started working on it. 

Together with ten painters in the mural work did I make a rough sketch in person, did I design it, and did I create colors. Next year the mural work was completed. The village became famous for the mural through the word of mouth of not only the village people but also the mountain climbers passing through the village. The mural has enabled the sleepy village composed of just over thirty families to be brisk one full of energy by the tourists traffic.

The Spirit Originated from "The Richness of Mind"

Paintings can never become the wealth or the honor to me, and in this poor climate and in the nature do I bury me not others. If he reason why I am being immersed in colors of the paintings, after cleaning up the various types of my life, is the unusual profit coming to me, then it is the richness of the mind that people understand other people, teaching how to love and forming the emotional bond of sympathy.  

Being enchanted with the mystery of colors I desert me and the present of me, and cut off  the past life resolutely. What is left is just some paintings. If I throw out them as well, that' would be so cruel. But I desperately hope that it cannot become the vanity to adorn myself. Some day if I set out on a trip, carrying the canvas on my back, into the nature full of the present colors in order to look for my soul, there is nothing equal to it in quality? Money controls the modern society, in which, removing the affectation, the author Kim Hyeongtae facing the truth inside the heart takes the beauty of nature free of hypocrisy as it is. He paints it on a canvas without making any kind of adjustments and draws communication with the audience. That corresponds with the author's own soul exactly. He may be creating the new visual language, expressing the beauty that remains dormant, doing his duty as an author. It becomes obvious that free-and-easiness and flavor he is pursuing passes to his work of art, and he is enlarging only his border with his unique individuality.

The purity, and cleanness being felt from unartificial nature have a thread of connection to the things which he wish to express. His works containing lyrical and delicate fragrance gives us the feeling of the absolute nature, and directly portrays the life of human who are living together with nature. Like this, he plans to hold his sixth private exhibition at the gallery of New Jooang Church located in Pyoungchon on February 11 ~18 through the theme of [That Fragrance To You].
