실용음악계의 전문 리더를 양성하는 

대불대학교 김광철 교수

선진 실용음악 커리큘럼 구축한 교육의 선구자 

슈퍼스타 K1의 서인국과 K2의 김지수, K3의 김건률, 팝시클의 미카와 가람, V.O.S의 최현준,김경록, S.JIN 그리고 쥬얼리 출신의 서인영이 가진 공통분모는? 바로 전남 영암에 위치한 대불대학교 실용음악학부 출신이라는 점이다. 현재 70여명의 재학생 및 졸업생이 연예계에 진출하여 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 10년도 채 되지 않은 역사지만 실용음악과가 있는 전국의 4년제 대학교 중에서 커리큘럼과 교육 인프라가 가장 뛰어나다는 평을 듣는다. 지난 해 제7회를 맞이한 ‘대불대 실용음악학부 전국 순회콘서트’를 통해 전국적인 유명세까지 얻은 전설적인 학과다. 그 중심에 김광철 교수가 있다.   

실용음악의 메카로 자리 잡는 대불대학교

대불대학교 실용음악학부의 커리큘럼은 다른 대학과 유사한 점도 있으나 음반 제작실습, 연주 실습, 저작권법, 예술경영과 공연기획 제작론, 무대 제작론 등 음악과 관련한 매니지먼트 분야까지 함께 공부한다는 점이 특징이다. 

김 교수는 “정기적인 자체 연주회, 중국 등 연간 3~5회의 해외 공연, 전국 학생가요제를 통한 우수 학생 유치, 다양한 공연 실습을 통한 무대 경험, 재학 중 음반 발매 등을 통해 재학생들의 이론과 실습에 다양성을 부여한다”며 이론과 실기도 중요하지만 실전을 통한 실력 향상이 더 효과적이라고 강조했다. 또한 “학교의 전폭적인 지원 아래 학생들이 최고의 시설과 최신 장비를 사용할 수 있다는 것은 분명코 타 대학보다 앞선 행보이며, 이러한 과정에서 경쟁력과 미래의 비전은 자연스럽게 커져가고 있다”고 강조했다. 

클래식에서 대중음악까지. 행정과 경영 이론도 겸비

대불대학교 실용음악학부(http://sm.db.ac.kr)의 김광철 교수의 이력은 매우 화려하다. 원래 클래식을 전공하고 국내외 유수 대학에서 석`박사 학위를 취득한 재원이다. 그러다가 학창 시절 선후배들과 대중음악 공연에 참여한 것을 계기로 실용음악계에 발을 들여 놓았다. 유학 후에는 공연 관련 매니지먼트 회사를 하면서 보다 밀접하게 실용음악과 인연을 맺었고 심지어 공무원 생활도 했다. 

또한 각종 콩쿨 심사위원, 지역 문화예술행정 및 경영 자문, 공연기획 및 제작과 연출 등에도 끊임없이 참여하고 있다. 이러한 다양한 경험을 살려 순수한 음악 분야보다는 예술 행정·경영에 관한 강의를 주로 하고 있다. 아트 매니지먼트 교육과 선진 음악교육을 접목시킨 실용적인 커리큘럼이다. 

“예술 행정과 경영은 우리나라가 특히 취약한 분야입니다. 음악을 전공한 사람들이 이쪽 분야로 많이 진출한다면 국내 대중음악의 안정과 발전이 앞당겨질 것으로 예상하고 있습니다. K-pop의 세계화에도 이바지하겠지요. 실용음악을 전공한 전문 인력이 이론을 겸비하여 음악 외적인 분야에서도 전문적인 지원을 할 수 있도록 하는 것이 저의 역할이라고 생각합니다.”

교수로서의 보람과 사명감이 가장 커

“대중음악이 대학교라는 제도권에 편입되어 실질적인 학문으로서 교육되고 연구되는 것에 큰 보람을 느낍니다. 우수한 학생을 유치하여 미래 지향적인 교육 시스템을 통해 다양하고 실력 있는 대중문화 예술인을 배출하는 것이 교수로서 해야 할 가장 중요한 임무겠지요. 또한 대중예술 분야의 교육자와 스타 예술인 양성도 필요한 부분이라고 할 수 있고, 창작 활동에 능통한 대중예술인과 공연예술 분야에 능통한 독창적인 예술인, 국제문화예술 분야를 선도할 역량 있는 창작예술인을 양성하고 키워내는 것이 현재 저의 가장 큰 목표입니다. 

대불대학교는 2013년에 당진 제2캠퍼스 시대를 맞이한다. 김 교수는 실용음악학부를 비롯한 다양한 학과에 많은 진전과 역동적인 활성화를 기대하고 있다. 학내 벤처설립 등을 통해 좋은 인재를 많이 확보하고 스타의 산실로 만들어 나가겠다는 구체적 목표도 정했다. 그는 개인적으로 어떤 교수상이 되기를 바라고 있을까?  

“16년째 강의를 하면서 느낀 것은 내가 공부하지 않고, 변화지 않으면 학생들도 변화시킬 수 없다는 것입니다. 따라서 늘 깨어 있는 교수로 남고 싶습니다. 앞으로 우리 학부가 대한민국 실용음악 교육을 선도하고 발전시킬 수 있도록 항상 공부하고, 변화하며, 깨어있을 생각입니다."

인기리에 방영중인 서바이벌 음악 프로그램을 패러디해서 표현하자면 “그는 교수다!”

An Educational Leader Who Made Advanced Practical Music Curriculum

What is the common point of Seo In Guk, Kim Ji Su, Kim Geon Ryul from Super Star K1, K2, &K3, a famous TV audition show, Mika Garam from Popsicle, Choi Hyun Joon & Kim Kyung Rock from V.O.S, S.JIN & Seo In Young from Jewelry? That is they took the Practical Music Course at Buddha University located in Yeongam. About 70 students from the university work in entertainment industry. Although the course has been 10 years, its curriculum and education infrastructure are with the best reputation among the universities having practical music course. Last year, as executing the 7^thBuddha University Practical Music Course National-Wide Tour Concert, the school became nationally famous. Those have been made by Professor Kim Kwang Chul. 

Buddha University settleddown as the Practical Music’s Mecca

The Buddha University Practical Music Course’s curriculum has something similar with other universities but they have their unique feature that they not only study practical music but also learn music managementsincluding album producing, performing, copyright management, art management & performance planning, and stage management. Professor Kim emphasized although theory and practice are significant, learning skills through real experience is more effectual as mentioning, "Through regular performance, international concerts holding 3 or 5 times each year, picking talented students in nation-wide audition, having stage experience through diverse performance practice, and releasing album during school year, we offer a variety of theories and practices." He also said, "Students studying with enough offers including the best facilities and equipment help themselves move forward faster than other schools, and this naturallyaids our students to have vision and competitive power."

As far as Popular Music from the Classic, Possessing Administration Theory

The career of Professor Kim at the Buddha University Practical Music Course (http://sm.db.ac.kr) is fabulous. He majored classic in undergraduate and he also finished master & Ph program in famous universities by studying in Koreaand abroad. Meanwhile he started the practical music career as participating in public music performance held by seniors and mates from his school. After studying abroad, he kept being in the field as running his own performance management company. Also, he used to work in the government. Further, he judged diverse audition and participated in a variety of culture art administration & management advisory and performance planning & producing. As using such diverse experiences, he usually teaches more art administration than pure music. This is the practical curriculum combined with art management education and advanced music education. He stated, "Korea is weak at art administration and management. In case people majored music work in the field, Korea public music will be advanced and developed and it will help K-Pop spread all over the world faster. I think my duty is to aid students majoring practical music to possess theory that will be resulted in making them show their talents for diverse purposes." 

As a Professor, Worth & Sense of duty is Major concern 

Professor Kim also mentioned that "I feel beautiful worth because public music is nowstudied as becoming a part of college courses. My ultimate goal as a professor is to raise talented artists and musicians through advanced education system that I suppose. Also, it is needed to raise fabulous teachers and star artists in the field and a number of creative artists for public performance and performance art that will result in leading the world culture art." 

In 2013, Buddha University is establishing the second campus in Dang Jin. Professor Kim anticipates further development and proactive improvement not only in the practical music course but also in other courses. He also expects to secure more talented students to make the program become the best artist academy as founding venture enterprises in the school. His dream as a professor is stated as following, "What I have felt as teaching for the last 16 years is that I cannot change students if I do not change myself. Consequently, I want to keep being an enlightened professor. No matter what, I will move forward as studying and changing to make our school’s course lead and develop the Korea practical music." As quoted a sentence from ‘I am a singer,’ a famous show on MBC, "He is a professor."
