이욱열 한국지역인터넷언론인협회(www.koreainews.co.kr) 중앙회장이 2012년 4월 총선에 출사표를 던졌다. 지역구는 자신의 고향인 경북 구미을. 기업들이 하나 둘 구미를 떠나면서 한국 산업발전의 핵심 진원지였던 구미공단이 한파의 직격탄을 맞았고, 이에 따라 일자리가 줄어들고 빈 상가가 속출하는 슬픈 현실이 그가 출마를 결심한 주된 이유다. 나아가 공단과 농촌 지역으로 대비되는 동서로 갈린 구미의 화합, 우수 학생 유출을 막아 교육경쟁력을 높이겠다는 것도 이 회장의 야심찬 계획이다.  

명품도시 구미를 위해 새 일꾼이 될 것을 자임

이욱열 한나라당 예비후보는 신뢰를 상실한 정당정치가 국민으로부터 많은 불신을 받고 있다고 진단한다. 올곧은 정책의 부재, 정치적 소통의 부재가 사회적 양극화를 심화시키고 있다고 비판하면서 젊은 세대의 취업난, 국민들의 삶의 질을 한 단계 업그레이드시키겠다는 포부를 밝혔다. 민생의 정치, 민생 경청의 정치, 민의 섬김의 정치 등 ‘삼민의 정치’를 실현하면서 신산업과 복지문화가 어우러진 고품격 명품도시 구미건설을 만들겠다는 것이다. 

이욱열 회장은 숭실대학교 대학원 정치학 박사로서 바른 사회 밝은 정치 시민연합 사무총장, 국회 입법 보좌관 등을 지내면서 정치권에 입문했다. 과거 이회창 대통령후보 상황실장 및 특보단장을 지냈으며 20여 년간 정계는 물론 관계와 학계 등을 두루 거치면서 쌓은 경험이 풍부해 정치권에 필요한 인물이라는 것이 대체적인 하마평이다. 

인터넷에서 체득한 인터렉티브 소통 

한나라당과 무소속 등 무려 9명의 후보가 치열한 접전을 벌일 것으로 예상되는 구미에서 그가 가진 칼과 방패는 공감과 소통이다. 이는 인터넷언론인협의회에서 쌓은 경험으로 생긴 소산이다. 포털 사이트는 물론이고 소위 풀뿌리 언론이라 불리는 지역 인터넷 매체와도 일궈낸 쌍방향 공감과 소통이 바로 그것이다. 인터넷 언론이 지역에서 뿌리를 내리려면 네티즌으로부터 신뢰를 얻는 것이 가장 중요하다는 그의 지론이 취임 후 1년 동안 효과적으로 반영된 때문이다.    

숭실대에서 정치학 박사를 받은 이 회장은 13대부터 17대까지 20년간 국회 입법보좌관을 역임하며 정치현장에서의 체험을 바탕으로 지난 1월 한 권의 책(<비봉의 정기와 금오의 기상을 품고>)을 세상에 선보였다. 자신의 정치 철학과 국정운영 철학, 정치인이 갖춰야 할 자세에 대한 내용을 책에 담아냈는데 “국민에게 감동을 주는 공감의 리더, 소통하는 국민이 더 많아져서 행복한 대한민국이 되기를 바란다”며 출판의 소감을 밝혔다. 

Never Give Up!

 “새로운 바람이 불어 정치판이 신선해져야겠다는 간절한 소망이 있습니다. 지난 20년 동안 이정무 전 의원에게선 겸손을, 신국환 전 산업자원부장관에게선 성실을, 이승무 전 의원에게선 경영철학과 나눔의 정신을, 이회창 전 자유선진당총재에게선 원칙과 소신을 배웠습니다. 이것이 제 소중한 자산입니다.”

그는 ‘never’라는 말을 가장 싫어한다. 결코 안 되는 것이란 없고, 인생의 반전을 즐기는 자세가 있어야 도전과 최선의 노력이 가능하다는 뜻이다. 이러한 그의 좌우명처럼 고 박정의 전 대통령의 본산인 구미에서 박근혜 의원 대통령 만들기의 씨앗이 되겠다는 다짐만큼은 절대 포기하지 않을 듯 보였다. 

Lee Uk-yeol, who is the central district president of the Korea Local Internet News Association (www.koreainews.co.kr), runs for a general election slated on April, 2004. His local constituency is his hometown, the Gumi B district in Gyeongbuk. He decided to run for this general election for several reasons. For example, an exodus of companies from Gumi has blown a devastating blow to its industrial complex, which was considered to have served as the center of industrial development in Korea. And a growing number of people and stores become jobless and close doors. Accordingly he set an ambitious plan for harmonizing the eastern and western parts of the Gumi district, which are divided into the industrial complex and rural area respectively, and for enhancing its educational competitiveness by preventing the drain of outstanding students there.   

New Worker for Building Up the Best of Gumi City

Lee Uk-yeol, the candidate for the Grand National Party in this upcoming election, thinks that the current party politics has lost much credit from people. He criticized its lack of right policies and lack of political communication for growing polarization of our society. He is willing to devote himself to solve the difficulty in the job market and upgrade a standard of living here. He is determined to build up a new Gumi dity of high quality where its new industry is well harmonized with its welfare culture, while implementing democratic politics for better livelihood of the people, listening closely to the people, and serving the people. 

Lee Uk-yeol, with a doctoral degree in politics from Sung Sil University, entered into the political circles as he served as a secretary-general of the Citizens' Alliance of Just Society and Clean Politics and a legislative assistant of the National Assembly. He used to be a chief director of the situation room and a special news director of the presidential candidate Lee Hoi-chang's camp. He is recognized a key political figure, who has accumulated abundant experiences on politics while undergoing the official and academic circles for 20 years.  

Interactive Communication Skills Acquired from Internet  

With his strong talent in bringing about sympathy and smooth communication, candidate Lee is ready to fight in Gumi where as many as nine candidates are expected to be in keen competition. His communication skills are the results from his experiences in the Korea Local Internet News Association. His strong weapons are his ability to evoke sympathy and carry out interactive communication that he has learned from not only portal sites but also internet media, which is also called grass-root journalism. He asserted that Internet media need to win much credit from netizens in order to take root in local areas. And such opinions were well reflected on his management practices for one year after inauguration.   

He worked as a legislative assistant for the National Assembly for 20 years from the 13th to 17th National Assemblies. Based on his experiences on the political field, he published his book in last January. He wrote about his political philosophy, opinions about running state affairs, and politician's required attitude. He expressed his feeling about his new book, saying that "I hope that more and more leaders and people can sympathize with each other, builing up a new happy Korea." 

Never Give Up!

"I hope that a new wind of change will blow to the Korean political world. For the past 20 years I learned many virtues from my political mentors, such as modesty from former lawmaker Lee Jeong-mu, sincerity from Shin Guk-hwan, former minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy, management philosophy and sharing mindset from former lawmaker Lee Seung-mu, and principle and belief from Lee Hoi-chang, previous leader of the Liberty Forward Party. Those are my cherished assets."

He never wants to say "never". That means there is nothing impossible and we can take up challenge and make our best only when we can enjoy the reverse of life. As suggested in his motto, he will never give up his desire for making Park Geun-hye president in Gumi, the hometown of the late president Park Jeong-hui.
