한국인으로서는 최초로 2007년 1월, 유엔 사무총장으로 업무를 수행하게 된 반기문 사무총장은 어려운 가정환경에도 굴하지 않고 무에서 유를 창조한 인물로 잘 알려져 있음은 물론, 타고난 성품과 성실함으로 자수성가를 넘어 대한민국의 외교와 안보를 책임지고 있다. 급변하는 세계의 태동을 감지하고 전 세계의 이슈가 발생하는 지역을 직접 방문하는 등 세계평화를 위해 혼신의 힘을 기울이고 있는 반 총장은 한국의 국위선양에도 힘을 싣고 있었는데 5년간의 임기를 두 번째로 시작하고 있는 그의 새로운 도전과 행보에 많은 국민들의 이목이 집중되고 있다. 

제33대 대한민국 외교통상부장관을 지낸 반기문 사무총장은 1944년 충청북도 음성에서 태어나 충주고등학교 2학년 때 외국학생의 미국 방문 프로그램(VISTA)에 선발돼 미국을 방문, 케네디 대통령을 만나면서 외교관의 꿈을 키웠다고 전한다. 이후 서울대학교 외교학과에 진학했고 졸업과 동시에 외무고시에 합격한 그는 외무부에 들어가 재직하다 하버드대학교 케네디스쿨에 유학, 1985년 4월 행정학 박사학위를 취득했다. 반 총장은 주인도대사관 1등서기관을 지냈고 주미국대사관 참사관 겸 총영사, 외무부 미주국장, 외무부장관 특별보좌관, 외무부 외교정책실장, 외무부 제1차관보, 대통령비서실 의전 수석비서관, 대통령비서실 외교안보 수석비서관을 지냈다. 또한 1998년 주오스트리아대사관 대사 겸 주비엔나 국제기구대표부 대사, 2000년 외교통상부 차관, 2001년 제56차 유엔총회 의장비서실 실장, 2002 외교통상부 본부대사, 2003년 대통령비서실 외교보좌관을 역임하는 등 그 능력을 인정받으며 외교관으로 승승장구했다. 그는 특히 제1차 북한 핵 위기 때 주미국대사관 정무공사로 재직하면서 한국과 미국 사이의 대북정책을 조율하는 실무 총책 역할을 했으며, 1997년에는 북한 노동당 비서를 지낸 황장엽이 망명할 때 중국과 필리핀을 오가면서 밀사역할을 해 망명을 성사시키기도 했다.

반 총장은 외교통상부 내에서 대표적인 미국통으로 알려져 있으며 철두철미한 업무 처리로 정평이 나 있다고 한다. 외교통상부 장관으로 재직 중인 2006년 2월, 유엔 사무총장직에 출마할 것을 공식 선언한 그는 같은 해 10월 유엔 안전보장이사회에서 단독 후보로 추대됐고 14일 유엔 총회에서 공식 제8대 유엔 사무총장으로 임명됐다. 이로써 한국인으로는 최초로 유엔 사무총장으로 막중한 임무를 부여받게 된 그는 현재 두번째의 제9대 국제연합(UN) 사무총장으로 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있었다.

2006년 10월 13일 192개 유엔 회원국으로부터 만장일치로 제8대 유엔 사무총장으로 공식 선출된 그가 국제정치의 본산지인 유엔의 수장 자리에 오른 것은 한국 외교사를 빛낸 커다란 사건이었다. 특히 유엔의 지원을 받아 어려움에서 벗어났?던 과거에서 벗어나 대한민국의 위상을 제대로 인정받은 것이라 할 수 있다. 그는 유엔 사무총장 수락연설을 통해 세계 안보의 평화적 해결과 발전, 취약한 국가의 인권 증진을 위해 노력하겠다고 밝히고, 말보다는 실천을 강조하고 유엔을 개혁하겠다는 강한 의지도 드러냈다.

Ban Ki Moon, the first Korean U.N. Secretary General elected January in 2007, was raised up in a poor family and made something out of nothing, and beyond becoming a self-made man based on good conduct and faithfulness, he takes responsibilities for Korea diplomacy and security. The General Ban, putting his best effort for the world peace as sensing the fast changing international situation and visiting struggle countries, enhances national prestige that he succeeded the reelection, and the world started paying attention to his new challenge and journey.  

In 1944, the General Ban, the 33^rd former minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, was born in Chungcheongbuk-do Eumseong-gun. When he was a second grade at elementary school, he was chosen as an international student for VISTA program that resulted in visiting the United States and meeting the president Kennedy. This was the motivation for him to dream becoming a diplomat. Afterwards, he was accepted by Seoul National University and right after graduated, he passed the Foreign Service Examination and started working at the Department of Foreign Affairs. He later went to the United States to keep studying, and April 1985, he received a Ph degree in science of public administration from Harvard University. Also, he used to work as the first secretary at the India Embassy, Councilor & Consul General at the United States Embassy, Director at the Department of Foreign Affairs in the United States, Minister’s special Adviser of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister of Foreign Affairs, Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Protocol Chief Secretary of the Presidential Secretariat, and Chief Secretary of Diplomacy & Security of the Presidential Secretariat. Further, he has been received credits when working as the Ambassador at the Australia Embassy & Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea in Vienna in 1998, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2000, Chief Secretary of the 56^th United Nations General Assembly in 2001, Headquarters Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2002, and Diplomacy Adviser of the Presidential Secretariat in 2003. In particular, he played a pivotal role as an Administrative Official of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United States of America as correcting the policy toward North Korea when the 1^st North Korean nuclear crisis occurred, and in 1997, he successfully worked as a secret envoy in China and Philippines to help the former North Korean Secretary Hwang Jang-Yop live in the warm exile in Korea. 

In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ban is known as one who is in a big alliance with the United States and referred to as a thoroughgoing worker. When working as the Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (February, 2006), he announced to run for the UN Secretary General election and became the sole candidate, and he became the 8^th UN Secretary General in the Official U.N. General Assembly on 14^th. As a result of it, Ban, the first Korean U.N. Secretary General, is executing his second term as the 9^th U.N. Secretary General. 

Ban, elected as the 8^th U.N. Secretary General by the unanimity of the 192 U.N. members on 13^th October, 2006 and become the leader of the U.N, a mecca of the international politics, is an invaluable person who makes the Korea diplomacy history proud. He helps Korea prestige soar in the world. In the U.N. Secretary General Acceptance Speech, he stated he would try his best to make the world peace and human rights and reform the United Nations as emphasizing, ‘Carrying on instead of thinking.’
