실력의 달란트로 주님을 섬기는 자 ‘장위제일교회 김기원 목사’

사람들의 생각과 인식의 변화, 문화의 변화를 이루는데 있어서는 1인 혹은 소수의 집단으로는 한계에 부딪히게 된다. 그렇기 때문에 세상의 중심이라 일컫게 되는 문화. 즉, 많은 사람들의 가치관이나 행동을 담고 있는 우리의 문화를 변화시키기 위해서는 그것을 표현하고자 하는 방법, 전달 수단이 중요하다. 사람들의 가슴에 잘 와 닿을 수 있는 표현 방법 중 하나는 바로 문서이다. 굳이 큰 소리로 외치지 않아도 차분히 나열된 문장은 사람들로 하여금 그 속에 내재된 깊은 의미를 각인시킨다. 이렇게 문화의 변화를 위해 문서로써 메시지를 전하는 이가 있다. 가장 근본적인 문화의 변화를 토대로 기독교 문화의 변화를 이끌어내고자 글을 쓰며 기독교 문화의 건전하고 참된 문화 전파를 위해 생명의 가치를 존중하고 사랑과 섬김, 배려와 실천을 행해야 한다고 말하는 문서선교자 김기원 목사가 바로 그이다.

문서를 통한 복음전파로 세상 모든 이들의 마음을 움직여

문서를 통한 복음전파로 실천적인 삶을 살고 있는 김기원 목사는 30년 동안 종교적인 가치를 담은 정치, 교육, 복지 등 여러 분야에서 크리스천 칼럼을 써왔다. 김 목사는 문서선교와 더불어 방송칼럼, 신학대학 강의, 부흥성회 및 선교집회, 특강, 세미나 등을 통해 기독교의 훌륭한 문화인 섬김과 사랑, 정직 등을 전파해 왔다. 지금까지 그가 쓴 저서들은 신학대학의 교재가 되고 교회의 신앙훈련 및 지도자훈련 교재로 사용되는 등 많은 사람들에게 삶의 축복과 영성의 깨우침을 가져왔다. 그 밖에 아빠의 기도, 리더십과 축복경영, 효자 부자가 되라 등 다수의 출간 도서는 기독교를 접해본 경험은 갖고 있으나 믿음에 대한 결심을 주저하는 이들을 위해 좋은 해답을 제시해 주었다. 누구든지 조금의 관심만 가지고 들여다본다면 글 속에 담긴 하나님의 사랑을 느낄 수 있다고 김 목사는 단언한다. 글쓰기는 하나님께서 주신 달란트이자 더 많은 복음을 전파하기 위한 하나의 수단이라고 말하는 김 목사는 오랜 목회활동을 통한 종교적 철학과 메시지를 그가 펴낸 104권에 책으로 전하고 있다. 그동안 과로로 쓰러지고, 오른팔의 마비증세를 2번이나 겪었지만 문서선교와 해외선교에 대한 그의 열정을 꺾기에는 역부족이었다. 사람의 육신은 죽으면 묻혀진다 할지라도 글은 세월을 막론하고 많은 사람들에게 읽히고 기억될 수 있다. 김 목사는 “30년간의 집필활동이 오로지 성령의 감동과 인도에 순종하여 행한 일이기에 글 쓰는 것만큼 행복하고 즐거운 일 또한 없다”고 말하며 앞으로도 하나님을 위해 쓰임받기를 원한다는 강한 신념을 내비쳤다.

“진정한 선교는 화려한 교회건물 안에서 이뤄지는 것이 아니라 사람들에게 다가가 함께 호흡하는데서 시작된다”고 말하는 김기원 목사는 (사)한국기독교문화예술총연합회 총재로서 기독교 문화의 정착과 발전을 위해 해마다 문화와 예술을 빛낸 크리스천을 선정하여 문화예술대상을 수여하는 등 세상을 향해 선교의 손길을 내밀고 있다. 또한 그가 담임목사로서 19년간 이끌어온 장위제일교회는 ‘말씀 충만한 교회’, ‘성령 충만한 교회’, ‘살아 움직이는 교회’라는 비전을 가지고 지역주민을 위한 이웃사랑 실천운동을 전개하는 등 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 세상에 전하고 있다.

“문화를 바꾸지 않고는 아무것도 바꿀 수 없다”고 말하는 김기원 목사는 대한민국의 문화가 변화되어야 정치, 사회, 종교 등의 변화와 발전을 기대할 수 있다고 말한다. 특히 사회문제 뿐 아니라 기독교 문화에도 영향을 미칠 수 있는 ‘한풀이’, ‘비교’, ‘체면’ 문화 변화의 필요성을 강조했다. 성실, 정직, 섬김, 협력의 삶으로 변화되어야 기독교 문화를 전파할 수 있으며 교회가 살고 나라가 사는 길임을 주장하는 김 목사는 자신의 목회 방향도 문화의 변화에 중점을 두고 이를 글로써 전파하기 위해 혼신의 노력을 다 하고 있다.

If only one person or a small group were to try to change people's thinking and awareness to change a culture, they are likely to face limitations. Therefore, to change a culture, where many people's values and behavior are embodied, comprising the center of our world, the means of expressing it and the tools used to convey the changes are important. A way of expressing it to move people's heart is writing about it. The calmly laid out sentences imprint a strong impression on people's minds with their deep meaning without having to shout out loud. And there is one person who conveys messages through writing to change culture as such. It is Pastor ki-won Kim, a missionary who writes calling for respect for the values of life, love, servanthood, consideration and good behavior in order to bring about changes to wrongful Christian cultures and spread a healthy and proper culture of Christianity.  

Spreading the Gospel through writing to move people's hearts

Pastor ki-won Kim who is practising what he preaches, is using his writings to spread the Gospel. He has written Christian columns for 30 years in various areas such as politics, education and welfare with a religious angle. Pastor Kim has spread the good values of Christianity such as servanthood, love and honesty by writing about them in columns and lecturing at seminaries, revivals, mission gatherings, and seminars. The books he has written so far have become textbooks for seminaries and are used for religious and leadership training at church bringing about much blessing in life and spiritual awakening to many. In addition, his many published books on father's prayers, leadership and blessing management, and rich people caring for their parents, have provided many good answers to those who have had religious experiences but have hesitated to make the leap of faith. Anyone who has read his books with a little interest, the pastor is sure, will feel God's love in his writings. Writing has been his God given talent and a tool to spread the Gospel according to Kim. He conveys his religious philosophy and messages from his many years working as a pastor through the 104 books he has published. Although he once fainted from overwork and twice experienced paralysis of his right arm, they were not enough to cut his passion for evangelism through writing and global missionary work. People's bodies may be buried upon death, but their writings will be read and remembered by many. Kim said, “Because I wrote for thirty years by only obeying the Holy Spirit's guidance, writing made me happy,” and showed his firm tenet of wanting to be used by God in the future as well. 

“I want to do my best to spread the Gospel of salvation and Christian culture till the day I die by writing about them.”

“Real evangelism does not happen in an extravagant church building but starts with approaching people and keeping in tune with them,” said Kim. As the president of the Korea Christian Culture and Art Council, Kim selects every year Christians who have spread outstanding culture and art for the development and settlement of a healthy Christian culture and gives them Grand Culture and Art Awards thus spreading the Gospel to the world. In addition, the Changwi First Presbyterian Church he has led as the pastor in charge for 19 years, has engaged in volunteer activities to help the less advantaged neighbors and spread God's love and grace to the world with the visions of a "church filled with the Word," "church filled with the Holy Spirit," and "lively church doing good works."
