The Hahoe Village in Andong is considered one of the most traditional Korean attractions where a Confucian way of living and folk culture have developed together throughout a long history. Its name Hahoe has such meaning of winding water that it flows surrounding this village in an S shape in the upper stream of the Nakdong river. This village became more famous for the visit paid by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and the former U.S. President Bush and the First Lady. What is better, it was designated as the folk materials in 1984 for the first time as a state-designated cultural property and improved the Korea's national image as it is registered to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. And the Pungjeon Hanjeongsik is the place where its visitors can enjoy the true taste of Korean foods in a 100-year-old traditional house with an elegant style of Korean culture near the Hahoe Village.

100-Year-Old Traditional Flavor & Taste

The Pungjeon Hanjeongsik (represented by Lee Su-Yeong), of which building was remodeled by Song Hyeok-Jong, a son of the 27th generation of the Yeonan Song family, is located behind the Pungsan postoffice, a 5-minute walk from the Haehoe Village. It is a traditional Korean food restaurant that displays the true taste of Andong in harmony with a traditional Korean house and food. It is also well known as a good place for family meetings and famous as one of the typical Korean restaurants among tourists at home and abroad with help from word-of-mouth. This restaurant was founded by CEO Lee Su-Yeong from Seoul, who tied a knot with Song Hyeok-Jong, a son of the 27th generation of the Song family, and accumulated her know-how and experiences on traditional Korean food while preparing food for ancestral worship rituals. CEO Lee goes further than simply succeeding to the tradition of Andong food, but concentrated her energy on adjusting the taste of Korean food to the appetite of people, young and old, men and women all alike. She explained a reason for starting her restaurant, saying that ¡°I started this restaurant to serve Korean traditional food to the visitors of the Hahoe Village in a comfortable atmosphere with the harmony of traditional house and food.

Traditional Food Peculiar to Andong based on Traditional Food Culture

Andong bibimbap is one of the hottest items along with Hanjeongsik. It represents a traditional style of Korean food just as it was once served to the sages of the village. It is a unique style of bibimbap mixed with nine vegetables along with soybean source instead of hot chilly source. Pungjeon Hanjeongsik takes pride in its menu in harmony with natural smell and taste. It is also well-served with a variety of the traditionally unique Andong side foods such as salted-Mackerel, mung-bean pancake and octopus. Moreover, the "Yangban Bapsang" worth of 20,000 won or so draws much popularity from guests out of a variety of traditional Korean dishes. It serves as a good way of understanding the food culture of Andong as it contains a variety of special products of this district. Besides, a variety of foods such as the well-known Andong steamed chicken, yam porridge mixed with ginseng, fresh Kimchi, Andong Mackerel, grilled meat, and a sweet drink made from fermented rice, are delicious enough to deliver the unique taste of traditional food not only to Koreans but also foreign visitors.

Introduced in SBS Live Today

Pungjeon Hanjeonsik has become more famous once it was introduced as a restaurant for traditional Korean taste on the Unlimited Zone, Q! and Arirang TV as well as SBS Live Today. It displays an elegant style of atmosphere in harmony with traditional Korean music. It also presents visitors with such tasteful foods in comfortable space, that a number of tourists and guests for family meeting can come here. It consists of special rooms for family meeting because its CEO considers it as very meaningful and honorable to have a special meeting in Pungjeon Hanjeongsik. Accordingly its warm-hearted treatment is a reason why its visitors do not forget the taste of Pungjeon Hanjeongsik. "We want to play a role as a front runner in the "Korean Brand" project, which has been carried out by the Andong government," she said. To that end, she has been studying the traditional food of the Andong family. With a great desire, it is highly expected that Pungjeon Hanjeongsik can become one of the most representative restaurants in Korea, where visitors can feel and experience the tradition of Korea along with the Andong Hahoe Village.
