2012년 5월부터 3개월간 전라남도 여수 신항 일대에 바다와 인간의 교류를 통한 문화·예술을 체험할 수 있는 여수세계박람회가 개최된다. 지구와 해양의 조화, 지구 생태계의 조화로운 어울림을 모티브로 한 2012여수세계박람회는 ‘살아있는 바다와 숨 쉬는 연안’을 주제로 펼쳐진다. 이것은 해양과 연안의 가치를 새롭게 인식하는 것은 물론이고 해양오염의 심화, 해양생태계 파괴, 해수면 상승 등 전 세계가 겪고 있는 인류공동과제에 대한 대안을 모색하는데도 기인할 것이다. 

YEOSU EXPO opens along the new port area in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, Korea for three months from May 2012 where you can experience culture and art through the exchanges between ocean and humankind. "The International Exposition YEOSU KOREA 2012" whose motifs is the desire to create harmony between the earth, the ocean, and global ecosystems spreads before you eyes with the main theme of "The Living Ocean and Coast". This is based on the common task of human beings to be come up with, such as serious ocean pollution, the destruction of the ocean ecosystem, and sea level rise as well as new understanding of recognizing the value of seas and coasts.

21세기 신해양 녹색 바람

2012여수세계박람회 조직위원회 강동석 위원장은 “2012여수세계박람회는 ‘살아있는 바다, 숨 쉬는 연안’이라는 주제로, 모든 생명의 모태이며 21세기 인류의 보고인 해양에 관련된 모든 기술과 지혜가 펼쳐지는 큰 축제가 될 것”이라며 여수박람회 개최에 대한 자긍심을 드러냈다. 1993년 대전세계박람회에 이어 19년 만에 우리나라에서 열리는 국제공인 박람회인 여수세계박람회는 해양과학기술의 진흥, 해양산업의 발전과 해양자원 및 연안의 지속가능한 발전을 촉진하고 국토의 균형적인 발전과 국가위상을 제고하는 동시에 나아가 인류공영에 이바지하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 전국적으로 생산유발, 부가가치, 고용유발 등의 상당한 경제적 효과 발생을 예상하는 여수세계박람회는 친환경 에너지파크 조성을 통해 태양열·풍력·조류·조력 등 신재생에너지개발을 위한 각종 최첨단 기술 전시·체험을 할 수 있으며, 특별한 전시연출과 독특한 스토리 전개로 관람객들에게 평생 잊지 못할 감동을 선사할 예정이다.

여수세계박람회 개최는 국제사회에 해양이용의 새로운 패러다임을 제시할 여수선언, 해양을 통한 개도국 지원프로그램 발전 등을 통해 새로운 해양문화 창조에 기인할 것이며 이를 통해 풍부한 해양자원을 바탕으로 하는 여수가 종합 휴양 관광지로 자리매김할 것으로 예상된다. 남해안 일대는 새로운 동북아의 관광지로 부각될 전망이며 해양자원 탐사, 해양오염제거 기술, 기후변화 예측·적응기술 등 미래 인류사회에 기여할 수 있는 첨단 해양과학기술을 개발·발전시키는 계기가 되어 해양과학기술 발전은 우리나라 과학기술 수준 제고에 전반적으로 기여할 것이다.

Propose New Paradigm of Using Oceans, The Emergence of North-east Tourist Attraction

EXPO 2012 YEOSU KOREA will propose a new paradigm on using oceans to the international community is based on the creation of a new marine culture by the development of supporting developing countries through oceans, and will make Yeo-su into the leading integrated tourist attraction and vacation spot on abundant marine resources. Some parts of the south coast are expected to be the new the foremost tourist destination. 

It will pave the way for developing such marine high-technology contributive to the future human society as is the exploration of marine resources, the decontamination technologies of ocean pollution, high-tech skill on the predictive and adaptive skills of climate exchange. With this, the development marine high-technology will surely contribute to reconsidering the level of technology of The Republic of Korea.

국내외적으로 국가 및 지역의 이미지 개선

박람회정보는 기존의 산업발전, 대도시 중심의 발전이라는 한국의 이미지를 불식시키고 자연과의 조화된 삶을 추구하는 한편, 중소도시를 중심으로 한 농·어촌 지역의 문화적 깊이 등을 세계적으로 알리는 계기가 될 것으로 판단된다. 특히, 세계에 다소 덜 알려진 한반도 서남권의 잠재력, 남해안 일대의 한려수도 및 다도해 해상 국립공원의 아름다움을 알릴 수 있는 좋은 기회이다. 세계적 저명인사의 국내방문이 이루어져 국내와의 교류가 활발해짐에 따라 우리나라의 국제적·외교적 지위도 향상 이 가능할 것이며, 박람회에 전시된 한국의 제품과 기술에, 문화예술, 이벤트 등을 통해 해외홍보가 자연스럽게 이루어지고 이에 따라 한국의 제품과 기술의 해외에서의 이미지가 전반적으로 제고될 것으로 기대하고 있다. 

Re-Branding the Nation, Region at Home and Abroad

Through the information of YEOSU EXPO, it is now believed that we can get rid of the image of Korea about the existing industrial development, development focused on big cities, and pursuit the harmonious life with nature. It is judged that the EXPO will pave the way to let the world know about the traditional culture of the Rural Area of Korea focusing medium-scale cities. 

Especially, It is a good chance for us to introduce the potential power of the somewhat less heralded southwest region of the Korean Peninsula, the beauty of Hanllyeosudo (120km-long waterway) along the southern coast of Korea, and Dadohae Oceanic National Park to the whole world. Prominent figures from around the world visiting the EXPO will caused the vigorous interchanges with Korea. This exchange will surely lead to the elevation of international status of the country, diplomatic post, and to overseas information activities for the Korean products and their technology through culture, arts, and various events, and to the general improvement of Korean goods and high-technologies in overseas markets.

국민 전체의 문화적 수준 공동체 의식 제고

여수세계박람회 위원회는 2012여수세계박람회를 통해 공동체의식의 제고, 국민의식의 국제화, 해외동포의 고국에 대한 이미지 개선 및 고국에의 기여도 제고 등의 효과창출을 고대하고 있다. 세계박람회를 통해 국제적인 감각을 습득하고 이에 따라 국민의식의 국제화가 더욱 진전될 것이며 대도시 지역에 비해 국제적으로 덜 열려 있던 중소도시 및 농촌 지역의 주민들이 자신들의 삶의 터전을 더욱 사랑할 수 있는 계기를 마련하는 등 긍지를 불어넣음과 동시에 세계 전체와 호흡을 나눌 수 있는 기회를 제공할 것이다. 이로써 연안지역 중소도시의 삶에 대한 관심은 증가할 것이며 문화적 대도시 집중현상을 완화하는 계기가 될 전망이다. 여수박람회를 통하여 해양·연안의 중요성, 환경 보전의 필요성과 자연 및 인간과의 조화에 대한 전 국민의 인식을 새롭게 하는 계기가 마련될 것이며 88올림픽, 2002월드컵과 함께 경제·사회·문화 등 여러 면에서 우리나라를 한 단계 업그레이드 되는 변곡점이 될 것으로 기대된다.

The Organizing Committee is looking forward to creating the effects of the improvement of the community spirit, the globalization of public opinion, and the improvement of image of homeland from overseas Koreans, the level of contribution to their homeland. With the EXPO people can acquire cosmopolitan outlook, the more progress of the globalization of public opinion. People in small and medium cities, in rural areas internationally less open can pave the road to love their livelihoods more and can have pride in their work.

The interest of life in small and midium cities increases, the concentration in a modern metropolis will slacken. Through the EXPO, people can have the special opportunity to freshen up their perception of the importance of oceans and coasts, the necessity of Environment Conservation, and humankind, nature in harmony. 

Together with '88 Seoul Olympic and the 2002 World Cup, EXPO 2012 YEOSU KOREA will be the inflection point that will surely upgrade The Republic of Korea by one step in economy, society, culture etc in many ways.
