Free Counseling Centers to create a Joyful World

Changwon Youngnak Church Pastor,

Kim Su Bong believes in the power of Optimism and Positivity

Changwon Youngnak Church¡¯s very own pastor, Kim Su Bong, is widely known to be a revivalist. His sermons are told through his own experiences and is made so anybody can understand his points easily in a positive light, giving listeners hope. Kim has helped heal the minds and bodies of wounded people in today¡¯s world, and his sermons have become very important in the life of many. As a pastor, Kim refused to work in big churches and rather chose underground churches in which he was able to successfully help all his clients. Kim is currently living a busy life, as he acts as the head pastor at a church, a revivalist, counselor, and also as a broadcaster. We interviewed Kim, talking about his life in the past and the present, and also his visions on the future.

Grew up in Poverty

When young, Kim¡¯s dream was not to be a pastor. As a child, Kim lived together with his grandparents, uncles, and parents. Their family was poor, and as the eldest son, he had to work hard by farming.

Kim reflected, ¡°When I was young, I helped my family out in farming, made food for cattle, and made meals when my parents were absent. I remember carrying chopped wood down from the mountains, and crying after taking a fall. I also did not have much time to study. The hardest job I had to do back then was farming. Thinking about my past experiences, I never say that anything is hard. My past was so hard, I don¡¯t even want to take hikes up mountains, nor do I eat boiled barley rice.¡±

After experiencing labor and a difficult early life, another one of Kim¡¯s dreams were to become the CEO of a company and to make lots of money. He gained the motivation to get a good education and to work hard. After graduating in the Department of Law at the Busan Dong-A University, Kim got Master¡¯s and Doctorate¡¯s from seven prestigious universities, which included the Houston Graduate School of Theology, Honam University, Chong Sin University, Yonsei University, and Cohen University. He eventually changed his motives to become a pastor, however, his past dreams weren¡¯t so easy to give up.

The Inevitable Road to Pastor

Kim was a child with good manners. His curfew was at 9PM, and it was a family tradition to have self control. Being such a sincere family, Kim and his family members developed a religious faith. Since childhood, he was very active at church, school, and at home.

Kim stated, ¡°When attending Theology school, studying was more important than activities as a pastor. However, one day, my missionary friend left his post and asked me to preach, which is when I started my road to being a pastor. After that night my missionary friend asked me to preach, I started my duties as a missionary.¡±

The church was located in the neighborhood that the past president, Kim Young Nam, resided in. It was a village that was economically struggling, which also meant a struggling church. However, after Kim took his post, the church went through a quick growth, as it was able to eventually buy its own building site. That was the height of the church¡¯s 60 years old history. This year is Kim¡¯s 24th year working as a pastor. Kim declined invitations from big churches, and lead small churches three times. His current church, Changwon Youngnak Church, is one of them. Although they all had difficult beginnings, all the churches that he lead were successfully revived. Such feats prove Kim¡¯s sincerity and seriousness as a pastor. Kim believes that such works have great worth to him.

Kind preaching that can be easily understood

At a young age, Kim worked as a revivalist. He has lead more than 1200 revivals till now in both domestic and international areas. His achievements were noted, and Kim received an award for his revivals by the Korean Revival Council.

Kim is famous for naturally pulling in believers through his touching and admirable sermons. His sermons are able to do so due to Kim¡¯s endless effort in studying the faith and his very own experiences. As part of the church, Kim also operates a family counseling center for free. Having a doctorate in counseling, Kim helps solve issues such as family violence, rape, teenager problems, divorce, and mental issues. He also has 5 lawyers for issues that require involvement in law. Kim views such activities to be as important as his job as a pastor.

Kim is also famous for his involvement in the <Share Old Clothes for Love> campaign. The campaign started out as a small volunteer activity, but has now grown into a company. With NI International, the company exported recycled clothing to Southeast Asian countries, and at one time, raised up to around $5,000,000. Kim showed his ability to successfully manage companies through creative ideas, and reached one of his childhood dreams. However, after a devastating car crash in 2002, Kim eventually ended his business and returned to his life as a pastor.

Job of today¡¯s churches, Job of today¡¯s pastors

Kim¡¯s response to the question ¡°What direction should Korean churches take?¡± was that they have to be cautious of expansionism. He stated that although it could be envious, big churches would have a negative effect on the religious faith and would affect the devoted believers.

He stated, ¡°If we aren¡¯t influencing the lives of the believers of the faith, we are not doing a good job. The thing that is needed is spiritual depth. There is no other road then to make one a true Christian. Korean churches need to risk everything. A church needs to be like a church, and a believer must be like a believer.¡±

Kim believes that love will change how we think, talk, and behave. That is why his family counseling center was created in 2004. It was created for both the people who attended the church and anyone else that desired for help in the relationship with their family. Kim revealed that he was once embarrassed to be a pastor. This was because churches were not able to fulfill its proper job and pastors and followers were not acting as proper believers of the faith.

¡°If you look at the bible, Jesus did not fight with a lawyer when he was hanged on the cross. However, followers of the faith in Korea are showing disgusting behaviors by accusing others and suing. I was so embarrassed, I could not put my face up. By starting counseling centers, I wish to stop the accusations that people are making towards others through the law.¡±

Kim¡¯s dream is to make happy families and a happy world, which is why he wishes to make free counseling centers around the nation. He also wishes to start law majors at religious schools. We have hopes that Kim¡¯s dreams of a happy world would start with the restoration of churches and pastors in the society.
