음식물 쓰레기가 신재생 에너지로 탈바꿈

한 해 20조 원이 넘게 발생하고, 처리 비용만 1조 원이 넘는 음식물 쓰레기. 쓸모도 없을 뿐만 아니라 환경오염을 유발하고 처리 비용까지 부담해야 했던 골치거리였다. 매립이나 소각을 하고, 사료나 퇴비로 쓰곤 했지만 2차 오염이 발생하여 또 문제였다. 이를 재활용할 수만 있다면?
버린 만큼 돈을 내는 음식물 쓰레기 종량제
곧 음식물 쓰레기 종량제가 전면적으로 실시된다. 많이 버리면 그만큼 요금을 많이 부과하는 방식이다. 종전에는 배출량에 관계없이 동일한 요금을 냈던 탓에 환경오염이 줄어들지 않았다. 이 제도의 본격적인 실시를 앞두고 가정은 물론이고 급식소, 외식업체 등 어쩔 수 없이 대량의 음식물 쓰레기를 배출해야 하는 곳에 비상이 걸렸다. 게다가 해양오염방지를 위한 국제협약에 따라 2013년 1월부터 음식물류 폐기물의 해양투기가 전면 금지된다. 특유의 식습관 탓에 잔반이 많이 배출되는 대한민국 전체가 비상이다.
이러한 시점에 음식물 쓰레기를 신재생 에너지, 부가가치가 높은 대체 에너지로 탈바꿈시키는 특허기술이 개발돼 주목을 받고 있다. 충북 청주에 위치한 중소기업 (주)푸드에너지(http://foodenergy.co.kr 대표 이관희)에서 개발한 음식물 쓰레기 재활용 처리기가 바로 그것이다. 2011년 대한민국발명특허대전, 서울국제발명전시회 등 각종 대회에서 우수발명품상을 수상하면서 관련 기업과 단체의 관심이 쏠리고 있다.
토종 기술로 세계를 넘보는 ㈜푸드에너지
푸드에너지는 5년 간의 연구와 실험 끝에 음식물 쓰레기의 100% 자원화가 가능한 재활용 기기와 처리 시스템 그리고 이를 활용한 난방 연료 개발에 성공했다. 무엇보다 위생적이며 편리성을 제공한 완벽한 처리 시스템이 큰 특징이다.
또한 기존 기기들의 문제점을 극복하기 위해 연구하는 과정에서 특허라는 값진 열매를 얻었다. 염분 제거 기능, 사용수의 정수 및 배수의 여과장치, 금속 투입 방지장치, 각종 안전장치 등 기기 하나에 특허가 무려 10건이다. 이는 타회사가 가지고 있지 못한, 감히 넘볼 수 없는 수준이다.
먼저 급식소 등에서 남은 잔반을 재활용 기기에 투입만 하면 기기센서에서 이를 감지하여 자동으로 탈수, 분쇄, 건조, 압축, 탈수과정을 거쳐 작은 펠릿(pellet)으로 뽑아낸다. 부피와 무게가 최고 10%, 수분은 최고 5%까지 줄어든다. 이는 다시 자동 이송스크류를 통해 배출되는데 적당 양이 모이면 자동으로 진공 포장되는 기능까지 갖춰 편리함을 더했다. 이 펠릿은 열병합발전소, 농가나 축사로 보내져 연료로 재사용되는데 기존 펠릿에 비해 열량은 10% 늘었으면서도 비용은 40% 정도 저렴하다.
쓰레기도 돈이 된다는 발상의 전환
이관희 대표는 “음식물 쓰레기 처리비용의 절감, 환경 보호, 경제적 이익 등 21세기 사회적 요구에 부응하는 기술이며 성과”라고 자신 있게 얘기했다. 앞으로도 멈추지 않는 연구개발과 투자로 곧 대규모 처리시설을 갖추고 단가를 낮춰 대중화?보급화에 앞장 서겠다는 포부도 밝혔다.
향후 수년간 경쟁사 없는 단독시장에 진입한 푸드에너지. 쓰레기도 돈이 된다는 발상의 전환으로 블루 오션을 개척한 대표적 강소기업이라 할 것이다.

Food waste worth KRW 20 trillion a year and costing KRW 1 trillion a year to process was hitherto considered a major headache that cost much to process and a cause of environmental pollution. They were buried, burned or used as fodder or compost, but this caused secondary pollution which was again a problem. How great if we could recycle them!
Food waste measured rate system of paying as much as thrown away
Paying for as much food waste thrown away will soon start nationwide wherein one gets to pay more if throwing away more. Until now, environmental pollution from food waste continued because people paid the same fee regardless of the amount thrown away. The soon-to-be-implemented measured rate system is alarming not only families, but also food providers and restaurants that can’t help but emit a large amount of food waste. Furthermore, it will be forbidden from January 2013 to throw away food waste into the ocean according to an international agreement forbidding marine pollution. All of Korea is therefore on alert as a country emitting much food waste because of Korea’s particular eating culture.
As such, a company that has developed a patented technology of turning food waste into renewable energy and alternative energy of high-value added is drawing much attention. It was awarded in numerous contests, including the 2011 Korea Invention Patent Exhibition and the Seoul International Invention Fair, for having invented an outstanding product. Food Energy reaching out to the world with Korean technology
Food Energy succeeded after five years of research and testing in developing a machine that recycles and processes 100 percent of food waste and a heating system using the processed waste. Most of all, it is hygienic and easy to use, making it a perfect processing system.
In the process of researching in order to solve problems of existing machines, the company succeeded in inventing a food waste processing machine and in registering numerous patents. The machine has the function of removing salt, a device to filter used and drained water, a device to prevent the insertion of metal, and all kinds of safety devices. The machine alone has over 10 patents. This is a great achievement that other companies cannot possibly try to surpass.When food waste is inserted into the recycling machine in a kitchen, the machine’s sensors detect the waste to dehydrate, grind, dry, compress and dehydrate it once more and create small pellets. The size and weight drops to a maximum of 10 percent and moisture to a maximum of 5 percent. The pellets are then again emitted through an automated transportation screw and once a proper amount has been collected they are automatically vacuum packaged, making it all the more easy to use. The pellets are sent to heat merging power plants, farms or stables and reused as fuel. These pellets produce 100 percent more heat than existing pellets and cost about 40 percent less.
From the simple thought that waste can become money
Representative Gwan-hui Lee of the company confidently said, “It is the achievement of technology meeting up to the social demands of the 21st century of cutting down the cost of processing food waste, protecting the environment, and accruing economic profit.” He said his company would continue to research and develop as well as invest to build a large-scale processing facility in order to cut the cost and lead the popularization of and spread the use of the machine.
Food Energy is currently the only company with the technology in the market with most likely no competing companies for a few years. It is a representative small but powerful company that pioneered into the blue ocean of turning waste into money.
