As all countries suffer enormous damage from environmental pollution, Net Zero, which brings real emissions of carbon, the main culprit of environmental pollution, to zero has emerged as a global megatrend. In the midst of this, the waste battery recovery robot device ‘PUNIC’ developed by Pionic Co., Ltd. (CEO Song Seungjun) is attracting a great attention.

Located in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, the company specializes in automation equipment. The company took seriously the hazards of waste batteries discarded with general household waste and the fact that the recovery rate of waste batteries is very low, and sought various ways to increase the participation in the separation and discharge of recyclable resources. Through this, the company devised an innovative waste battery recovery device and developed its research capabilities with industrial robot manufacturing technology and know-how accumulated since 2013, and introduced ‘PUNIC’ in just over two years.

Equipped with remote control function, real-time monitoring of waste battery collection status

Reward points are provided instantly, and the amount of waste battery recovery can be greatly increased

The ‘PUNIC’ device is equipped with machine vision software based on big data and AI deep learning, which are the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution. Therefore, more than 110 types of batteries used in Korea are completely distinguished from foreign substances to recover only the batteries and foreign substances are prevented from entering the recovery machine so that they are not contaminated. ‘PUNIC’ is a structure that works with smartphone applications and Android-based kiosk touch screen, so anyone can use it easily and conveniently. Citizens participating in the resource recycling movement can identify the place where the waste battery collection device is installed with a smartphone application, use it non-face-to-face at any time during the 24 hours, and easily check and manage their waste battery input history and rewards.

This product is also equipped with a remote control function, so that the collector manager can monitor the waste battery collection status in real time, and when about 80% of the waste battery in the collection box is loaded, the notification function is activated, thereby reducing the administrator’s work and relieving the inconvenience of users. Another advantage of ‘PUNIC’ is that it provides instant reward points for participating in the recycling of waste batteries. This is a carbon point system in which the government grants points to companies according to their carbon reduction rate, and the accumulated points can be converted into cash and used in the market or donated to NGOs that take the lead in protecting the environment.

Schools can also convert the accumulated points into volunteer activity points.

By installing the innovative waste battery collection device ‘PUNIC’ with a reward system for giving back to the local community, government offices, subway stations, convenience stores, supermarkets, large marts, apartment complexes, schools, and financial institutions, including administrative welfare centers with many people, many citizens will be compensated for the emission of waste batteries, contributing to environmental protection and naturally providing motivation to participate in the government’s 2050 carbon neutrality movement. In addition, it can maximize the resource circulation structure while reducing the waste of operating personnel, which can greatly increase the recovery of waste batteries. In particular, installing ‘PUNIC’ in elementary schools and conducting a waste battery recovery campaign is a good opportunity to actively participate in this activity while reminding children of the importance of environmental protection and the value of resource recycling.

Acquired domestic patent and KC certification, applied for an international patent

Active practice of carbon neutrality and ESG management, striving to develop future technologies to realize an eco-friendly society

Pionic, which has achieved the digitalization of metal resource circulation, has obtained a national patent and KC certification for the world’s first waste battery recycling robot ‘PUNIC’ and is in the process of applying for an international patent. The company has set the price at 8 million won to increase the penetration rate of the new cost-effective waste battery recovery machine ‘PUNIC’, and provides a customized wrapping service that customizes the appearance of ‘PUNIC’. The company has set the price at 8 million won to increase the penetration rate of the new cost-effective waste battery recovery machine ‘PUNIC’, and provides a customized wrapping service that customizes the appearance of ‘PUNIC’. By using this customized service, local governments can facilitate waste battery recovery campaigns and cultivate citizens’ awareness of waste battery separation and resource recycling. In addition, through the kiosk display screen of ‘PUNIC’, advertisements, publicity, and various announcements of projects promoted by local governments can be carried out, which can achieve the effect of one stone to catch two or three birds.

Pionic is receiving orders from local governments, and plans to distribute ‘PUNIC’ from Gwangju and Jeonnam and expand it sequentially nationwide. The company envisions a way to help economically and create jobs by prioritizing the management of waste battery recovery devices to vulnerable groups living in the installation area, and is preparing for social enterprise certification and designation to realize this.

Song Seungjun, who spreads the value of resource recycling through waste battery recovery machines, actively practices carbon neutrality and ESG management in line with the global trend. In addition, he is working hard to develop future technologies that can realize an eco-friendly society, such as revitalizing the resource circulation system and developing recycling devices. CEO Song says, “Batteries are more than 95% recyclable resources, so they have been designated as an item subject to the government-controlled EPR obligation. If waste batteries are disposed indiscriminately, harmful heavy metals such as iron, nickel, manganese, mercury, cadmium, and zinc inside will pollute the soil and water, causing the collapse of natural ecosystems that can outbreak serious diseases, intensifying global warming, and explosions and fire caused by toxic gases. It is hoped that local governments nationwide will install ‘PUNIC’ throughout multi-use facilities to solve the problem of local governments’ waste battery compensation exchange projects that are not effective due to lack of awareness of resource recycling and the inconvenience of having to visit administrative welfare centers, and greatly increase participation in waste battery separation and discharge.”
