A world where people live more valuable

CMES, a robot precision control solution company

CMES (CEO Lee Sung-ho) is a robot precision control solution company that provides automation solutions with the vision of ‘a world where people live more valuably’ and aims to eliminate the boundaries of robot utilization and enable safer and more creative activities.

It is a company that aims to empower robots with intelligence to work more freely with AI robot vision technology. The era of the 4th industrial revolution has arrived, and robots are being used in industrial sites, but many people are still working hard to operate equipment and carry heavy loads. As a result, many workers suffer from musculoskeletal disorders and overwork, and the death rate from industrial accidents is high. CMES has researched and developed a variety of technologies to help people focus on more valuable things in a safe environment than unnecessary manual works.

One of them is an unstructured automation solution that can be applied to flexible production of multiple kinds instead of the existing robotic automation, which is limited to repetitive mass production processes. Existing robotic automation is geared towards manufacturing small varieties in large quantities, so in order to produce multiple varieties flexibly, it was necessary to increase the number of robots or borrow human hands. So, CMES uses 3D vision and vision & robot control software and AI technology to increase flexibility to enable manufacturing in a variety of sizes and shapes. An official says, “By creating a world that is convenient for people to use it everywhere, we will lead positive changes in production and consumption by connecting ideas, products, and technologies.”

Providing various robot solutions

Loading regardless of the location or the loading item

CMES provides various solutions through the technology, software, and devices it has developed. One of them is unstructured industrial process automation. The company has extended the automation of atypical industrial processes not only to simple production processes but also to packaging and conveying. One of the solutions offered through such extensions is random mixed depalletizing. This is a robotic automation solution that checks the size and position of various boxes/bags randomly stacked on pallets through artificial intelligence and 3D vision, and picks them up and moves them to a conveyor belt or designated location without additional robot teaching. In order to entrust this process to robots with existing robotic automation technology, humans had to sort the sizes and arrange them in order. However, robots with CMES’ solution accurately recognize bags that are crumpled, unruly position, or even bags of different materials. Of course, the taping status does not matter, and above all, it uses 3D point cloud processing to calculate the stacked position and height information of boxes and bags through 3D scanning to identify the most suitable boxes and locations for work. It has the ability to prevent collisions in the robot’s east section and automatically create a path to avoid it.

It also offers a solution to load items on pallets as opposed to moving items from pallets. Mixed Case Palletizing is an intelligent robot automation solution that uses artificial intelligence and 3D vision to check the size and position of different boxes and load them on pallets in the optimal form simulated by AI without separate robot teaching. Even if boxes of various sizes are delivered in various positions, they can be accurately recognized and worked.

Enabling flexible production of atypical, multi-variety processes

Any packaging is made simple with robotic automation

CMES offers a wide range of solutions in the production process as well as the loading process. One of them is advanced dispensing/gluing. When assembling an object or applying an adhesive for assembly, the existing robotic process has a disadvantage that it can only perform previously specified tasks. In order to change the shape or position, the robot must enter a separate command, and if it is entered incorrectly, the process line will be twisted or the product will be lost. However, by applying CMES’ solution, it is possible to recognize objects with different shapes or flexible materials and control them to maintain a certain distance from the target surface and the spraying/application angle to guide stable and constant work on the surface.

By applying the advanced assembly solution, complex and difficult, variable assembly processes can be performed without human intervention or robot path guidance based on high-precision measurement and control technology using artificial intelligence and 3D vision. Through this solution, even atypical products that are slightly different or elastic and deform can be robotically automated, and even if the variety is changed, the pass can be automatically modified and generated, enabling flexible production of multi-variety processes. This can be applied to the mass production lines of global electronics companies at home and abroad through high-precision robot path control. CMES provides an order/piece/bin picking solution that accurately recognizes the type, location, and picking point of randomly stacked products, selects and sorts the required products and quantities according to the order, and the box void fill sole automation solution that accurately measures the empty space and volume of packaging boxes containing different goods and quantities, and automatically inserts the required amount of cushioning material.

Application to a Korea’s first 3D pin inspection solution mass production site

Development of EQUAL, a digital twin robot simulator

In addition to robotic automation solutions, CMES also offers inspection and verification solutions with vision and three-dimensional sensors. Through 2D/3D sensors and scanners, the company has succeeded in developing high-speed image processing software, which enables 3D pin inspection solutions, 3D line inspection solutions, internal particle and sealing quality inspection, processing failure determination, and total volume measurement such as height, width, and breakage. In particular, the 3D pin inspection solution was applied to the mass production site for the first time in Korea, and high-resolution image processing is possible with the self-developed scanner and image professional core.

Recently, CMES is developing the robot simulation software platform EQUAL. EQUAL is digital twin robot simulator simulation software that allows you to check the workspace where the robot and 3D vision are installed in a virtual environment and set up the system. Using digital twin technology, it is possible to check in advance the problems that may occur during actual deployment or the appropriate placement location, thereby increasing the convenience of process setting and reducing the time required for setting. CMES received great attention when it introduced EQUAL at SF+AW 2022.

Through these solutions, CMES won the grand prize in the Manufacturing/Logistics Infrastructure category at the Customer Satisfaction Management Awards for two consecutive years and won the 4th Industrial Revolution Smart Factory Award also for two consecutive years.
