Production of high-speed, miniaturized, and precise customized servo drives

20 years of expertise: Welcon Systems

Welcon Systems (CEO Park Sangdeok) is a company that develops and provides servo drives of the specifications and shapes desired by customers based on its 20 years of experience in servo drive know-how.

One of the most important parts in the robot and automation equipment industry is the servo motor. Servo motors are motors used to move robot arms or position automation equipment. As the demand for robots and automation equipment increases in industrial sites, the need for them is also increasing. The device that makes the servo motor move properly is the servo drive, which controls the torque, control, and position of the motor. It is a power device that moves the servo motor. The industrial trend tells us that the equipment is becoming high-speed, high-precision, and miniaturized, and accordingly, more servo motors are attached to the equipment. Dozens to hundreds of servo motors run in one device, but the problem is that as much as the servo motors are attached, the servo drive must also be attached. CEO Park Sangdeok said, “In the past, there was a separate computer to control, but as dozens to hundreds of motors were used in the equipment, the drive gradually took on the role of a computer.” However, as the number of drives increased, wiring, space, and weight problems arose. To solve this problem, Welcon Systems develops and supplies mini drives, multi-axis integrated drives, and customized drives that can be precisely controlled.

In-depth knowledge and understanding of robotics

Servo drives desired by domestic companies

The strength of Welcon Systems is that it has in-depth knowledge and understanding of robotics and automation equipment. As robots and automation equipment become more advanced, the servo motors required for them and the technology required for servo drives are also changing. Welcon Systems has not only the technology and knowledge of servo drives, but also the technology and knowledge that encompasses the entire robot and automation equipment, so it can operate the equipment or provide necessary mechanical engineering knowledge. CEO Park said, “When controlling a robot, it is necessary to understand friction, performance, robot, and equipment to find out why some control are not possible. In this way, even parts such as servo drives can be made to be controlled optimally.”

This confidence of Welcon Systems is working as a significant strength in the current market where miniaturization and high speed are required. Until recently, the proportion of overseas servo drives was much higher than that of domestic products. However, as the types of devices used in Korea gradually diversified and the number of robots and equipment developed in-house increased, it was difficult to find the necessary requirements only with products from abroad. In addition, the cost is high and the necessary functions are often not available. CEO Park said, “When making robots of various shapes, it is rare to find a drive that fits the size, shape, capacity, and specifications. In addition, because it has to go through several steps from overseas, the price is expensive, it takes more than a year to deliver, and on-site support is not good.” Welcon Systems develops servo drives with the specifications and shapes desired by customers to meet the market environment and provides tuning technology for various motor-encoder combinations. In particular, as it is a domestic product, even if a problem arises, it can respond to the request immediately, so many companies are currently using Welcon Systems’ servo drives.

From multi-axis servo drive to customization

Providing an integrated system for motor control

Welcon Systems intends to provide a ‘motor control integrated system’ from servo drives to controllers, monitoring apps, and software through its excellent technology and understanding of robotics and automation equipment.

Wellcon Mini Drive, one of such products, is a servo drive that can be used in response to small low voltage servo motors despite its small size of 67x42.5x28mm and weight of 71g.

It is well applied and used in semiconductor post-processing equipment because it is good to install on the head part of equipment that uses a lot of small low-voltage servo motors.

It supports EtherCAT/CAN and USB communication, and serial encoders such as BiSS, SSI/Tamagawa/Panasonic encoders in addition to incremental encoders, Sin/Cos encoders and analog hall sensors.

Of course, if servo drives are installed to cope with dozens or hundreds of servo motors, the number of mini drives, no matter how small, becomes a burden. Above all, when connecting the drive and the line, the wiring becomes complicated and the cost due to the wiring cannot be ignored. To this end, Welcon Systems controls multiple motors with one drive, such as a slot-type small 2-axis drive that can be used by plugging into the slot of an expansion board, and a stand-alone type 2-axis drive that can drive two 400W class motors alone. The company also develops and provides servo drives that can do this. In addition to this, in response to the increasing demand for high-performance LMMT (Linear Moving Magnet Transport) systems that respond to complex logistics, the company provides a small high-voltage drive for LMMT equipped with firmware required by domestic LMMT equipment manufacturers and a single-axis drive with 850W capacity, along with customer-requested products. The company also develops and provides a variety of servo drives, including drives that can be customized in function, capacity, size, and shape. Through this, Welcon Systems provides a high-speed, high-precision motion control solution that perfectly controls various production lines by precisely controlling the motion of the drive motor required for smart factories. In addition, it provides a collaborative robot control system that uses the Robot Joint servo drive developed by itself to keep industrial sites safe and reduce work load to increase productivity. The company is not satisfied with this and continues to develop new products such as the 805W stand-alone type 2-axis drive. CEO Park said, “My first goal is to make a company that is worth hundreds of billions of dollars with just one drive.”
