Fostering caregivers through field-oriented education

Helping caregivers find their own answer to questions

Since its establishment in 2014, the New Hope Caregiver Education Center located in Namyangju has fostered about 3,200 caregivers with upright character and professional capabilities.

The center pursues human-driven resource and curriculum development and supports education and mentoring tailored to each trainee. The biggest strength of the center is that you can receive field-oriented education according to the values of Director Cha Jeong-sook. For Cha ‘field’ is the most important. No matter how much theoretical and practical training is completed, it is difficult to demonstrate the ability if you do not know the field. That is why it conducts lectures tailored to the field and educate them so that they can fully demonstrate their abilities even when they are put into the field. So the instructors encourage students to throw as many questions as possible. Director Char says “I personally asked a lot of questions to the students. They can think and answer, and I did a lot of learning guidance that uses a lot of frontal lobe.” For the workbooks used, instead of commercial materials, workbooks produced by the center are used. These workbooks deal with many subjective questions, so instead of simply choosing an answer, trainees come up with their own answer and write it so that to check whether they really know the knowledge they learned.

Speech training for easy care

the New Hope Caregiver Education Center considers speaking skills as important as knowledge and practice for the field, and is also providing speech training. This is because caregivers’ work involves dealing with a variety of situations across multiple boundaries. Director Cha said, “We are not nurses or nursing assistants, but we do similar tasks. So, it is important to make sure that the elderly can receive care comfortably. When the total work of a nursing care worker is 100, the emotional part is 70.” Since the caregiver’s job is to take care of the emotional part of the elderly, this approach is very helpful in the field.

Currently, there are about 600,000 long-term care recipients who need caregivers. The reason why New Hope Caregiver Education Center focuses on fostering industry professionals is because they can contribute to the economic circulation of our society, which is gradually moving toward a super-aged society. The center is an affiliated institution and has been operating a welfare center for the elderly since 2013, and currently has 110 workers and 120 users. Director Cha said, “The number of elderly population is now 10 million. Even so, there are many elderly people who cannot find care centers because they cannot find a caregiver. So, I hope that those with qualifications will be put into the field and help them like my parents. Then, it will ease the burden on families and become a way to achieve the concept of income redistribution.”

Director Cha listed name in the 2022 Korea Social & Industrial Contribution Awards in caregiver category.
