With the growth of non-contact trade starting from the pandemic, the robot market is also growing. According to the International Federation of Robotics, the industrial robot market grew by 31% compared to last year. Professional service robots accounted for 37% and personal service robots accounted for 9%, recording an average annual growth rate of 11% from 2016 to last year. In the US, robots are expected to fill the labor shortage in the manufacturing industry by 4% by 2030 and the nursing labor shortage by 2% by 2035. The industrial robot market is expected to grow by 7.5% yearly through 2025. Accordingly, the demand for robot design is also increasing.

22 years of experience and know-how in medical robot design

Since medical devices are a field connected to human life, it is difficult to apply the technology for new devices or robots. This also applies to design. While aesthetics and ease of use are generally emphasized in design, hygiene and safety come first in medical devices. For this reason, it is difficult to approach with the sense of general industrial device design from the point of view of manufacturing medical devices. Gorobo Design is a design company that has accumulated know-how for more than 22 years in these medical devices. In accordance with the recent industrial trend, the field of medical robots is in the spotlight, and Godesign established Gorobo Design, a division under the company. Gorobo Design has many experience in medical robot design and is expanding its scope to industrial robots, professional service robots, logistics, and smart farm robots in line with the trend. Kim Doo-man, CEO of Gorobo Design, says “We pursue innovative designs that can increase the value of robots. We have been designing various robots for many years, focusing on the value that can enhance the brand and marketability of robots through design.”

User-centric interaction

From design to promotion and corporate value

Gorobo Design uses ‘interaction’, ‘story’, and ‘3D simulation’ to start the design concept from the interaction between humans and robots. Designers have a design process based on engineering data about users and robots and simulations of the robot’s motion environment. CEO Kim said, “It is very important to be stylish when it comes to personal products. However, for medical or industrial use, it is more important to conform to certifications and standards rather than style. Only when these standards are met can we design and become a product that can be sold.” Gorobo Design contains a story in robot design. Through the reflection of future-oriented storytelling, the advanced technological image experienced by the user is projected to give the robot confidence. The role of design is to incorporate the good experiences universally recognized by various users into robots in a formative way. Gorobo Design selects necessary and obstructive elements based on usage scenarios revealed in the robot environment and incorporates them into the design. CEO Kim said, “It is important for logistics robots to consistently contain the motto or promotion pursued by the company through design. That’s how you have to put a story and create a concept.”

Accurate and speedy design with 3D simulation

Accurately analyze every moment the product operates

Gorobo Design creates accurate and speedy designs through 3D simulation. This is a key step in the design process. The company’s design personnel are 100% from industrial design majors, and they use a 3D design process rather than a flat surface to quickly reduce the development period. It uses 3D design tools to understand detailed robot movements and environments, resulting in high accuracy. As these experts work in 3D from the beginning, the time to produce the result is fast, and if a problem arises, it can be quickly resolved. For example, after dividing the operation of the product from turning on to turning off, all the parts that operate in the middle are divided into segments, and then analyze what would be inconvenient or risky. Considering reasonable productivity, manufacturing efficiency, and assembly convenience, the design completeness is maintained so that the initial design does not differ from the mass production, and durability and solid quality can be made. Kim said, “The robots we are looking at are not simple products of mechanical engineering, but create new values, and there must be a story that contains values that can replace humans.”

CES Innovation Awards, 2022 Korea Social & Industrial Contribution Awards

‘Magnetio Platform (Project Name: Stem Cell Navigator)’, which won the CES2023 Robot Division Innovation Award, is the world’s first mass-produced next-generation medical robot developed by Biot Korea, a medical robot startup, and designed by Gorobo Design. The CES Innovation Award is held every January in Las Vegas, USA, and is an award given by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) to the first technology that can innovate the market. It is the first time that a micro medical robot has won an award in the robot category, and it is the result of increasing the value of design based on a high level of understanding of robots. Based on the experience of Gorobo Design considering the mobility and weight of the electromagnetic field, it is stable and focused on the original value of the robot to maximize its performance. In collaboration with Biot Korea researchers, operation performance reflecting the clinical environment of medical staff, location reflection and finish, and hygiene environment were also considered. This is an example of applying not only stable usability by minimizing the movement of the medical staff during surgery, but also applying detailed design to the details of the part that touches the patient. The artificial joint surgery robot Dr. LCT is also a work of Gorobo Design. This product was recognized for its simple and sophisticated design and won the Good Design Award from the Korea Institute of Design Promotion and the Asian Design Prize Gold Winner. In addition to this, Gorovo Design has received numerous design awards: Prestigious design awards at home and abroad, such as Italy A Design Award & Competition, Good Design, Trade Industry and Energy Minister’s Prize, Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, DK Award, Pinup Design Award, Asia Design Prize, and K-Design Award. Recently, the company won the robot design category at the 2022 Korea Social & Industrial Contribution Awards.
