The Hanyang Cyber University Department of Senior Business (Head Professor Kim Shin-young) started recruiting freshmen and transfer students for the first semester of 2023 from the 1st of this month. The department was established as the first cyber university to major in senior business, and aims to nurture professionals who will lead related industries such as health and care alongside start-up and consulting, and leisure and education in preparation for an aging society in this time of a low birth rate.

An official says, “The  department is growing alongside increasing social demand, with a 54% increase in the number of students applying from the last recruitment. In accordance with the implementation of the Aging-Friendly Industry Promotion Act and the Long-Term Care Insurance Act for the Elderly, valuable results obtained at an urgent time to nurture professionals in the silver industry. Graduates of the department can work in product development, service provision, aging consulting, etc. based on various education on senior business, while going to graduate school or working in government and affiliated organizations, research institutes, and overseas senior business-related companies and services. It can work well enough even with professional personnel in the institution.”

The department provides products and services suitable for the semi-retired population over 50, retired population, and elderly population, as well as entrepreneurship and consulting theories and practices. Professor Kim Shin-young, head of the department, said, “The department is the only one in Korea that continues research and educational activities on the silver industry from a business perspective based on demographic and economic understanding of the aging era. The characteristic of silver industry is that it is the most practical and efficient major in facing an aging society. We are preparing a new curriculum and various special lectures that we have never experienced before, and we are doing our best to create opportunities for new and transfer students to gain as much as the time they invested. Korea is also one of the countries with the fastest aging rate in the world. It is thought that the key issue will be how to handle the growing elderly population, and more attention will be paid to the functionality of the senior industry, including the creation of new jobs. At this important point, the department should make more efforts to present a new milestone.”

Kim added, “I think that the newly started admissions and transfer inquiries are mainly interested in the department for a new experience that will support the second life. Our faculty will also provide more marketable and practical knowledge. We ask for your interest.”

Hanyang Cyber University revised its learning management system in accordance with international standard. In particular, the university has received favorable reviews for its own video seminar system that allows simultaneous access by up to 1,000 people. The total number of students is 19,441 (undergraduate 18,279, graduate 1,162) as of 2022, boasting the largest number of enrolled students among existing cyber universities.
