Through professional psychoanalytic treatment, ‘understanding’ the sick mind and bringing ‘comfort’

Differentiation made with extensive experience as a child and adolescent psychiatrist and a IPA 강민지 기자l승인2022.10.21l수정2022.10.21 15:45

▲ Yu & Moon (mental health medicine) / Director Moon Soo-jin

Director Moon Soo-jin of Yu & Moon is a psychiatrist, child and adolescent psychiatrist, and a certified psychoanalyst by the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). IPA is the world’s most prestigious international psychoanalyst organization, founded in 1910 by Freud, the creator of psychoanalysis. In order to obtain the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) Psychoanalyst Qualification, students must complete several years of training courses recognized by the IPA and pass difficult exams. There are only a few dozen psychoanalysts in Korea who have obtained IPA psychoanalyst qualifications. In particular, the fact that there are only a handful of people in Korea who have both a child and adolescent psychiatrist and an IPA psychoanalyst at the same time and it shows how difficult it is to go through this process.

Director Moon says “I obtained a psychiatry specialist through a four-year residency program, and then went through a two-year fellowship program to obtain a child and adolescent psychiatrist. After that, I challenged the IPA Psychoanalyst course again. I was afraid to take on the challenge because I knew it was a difficult and long process that required a lot of time, money, and energy. But after these efforts, I became a psychoanalyst, and psychoanalytically, I was able to deal with the patient’s inner self much more deeply. It is not easy to find a teacher who is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst in our country. I think this is the most differentiated part of Yu & Moon.”

Play therapy improves professionalism and efficiency

Another differentiated competitiveness of Yu & Moon is that Director Moon is directly conducting psychoanalytic play therapy with the child without hiring a play therapist separately.

Moon says “I take a psychoanalytic approach to treating patients. There is no one without a wound in heart. Most of the children and teenagers who come to me are those who, consciously or unconsciously, feel a lot of pain in their hearts because of the big and small wounds they carry. I am playing a role in helping children understand their own minds they do not know themselves through the process of understanding the inner side. When children come to understand the wounds in their hearts that they did not even know they are aware of, it means that they have greater strength to endure them. My psychoanalytic therapy can also be described as therapy that helps children become much more comfortable with life. It is very rewarding if a child who has suffered a lot of discomfort can see and feel the world a little more comfortably by meeting me.“

These days, life of modern people is getting tougher due to fierce competition and the resulting stress. Understanding the wounds of the heart, giving them the strength to endure them, and helping them make life more comfortable is more valuable than jewels. We hope that Yu & Moon will become a place where people with many pains of heart can come to get peace and stability of mind and help themselves settle into a bright future.
