The 5.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the southeast part of the Korean Peninsula back in 2016 gave a wakeup call for the government to bring tougher seismic design policy. This not only include building itself but also the lighting system. In accordance with this toughened seismic design policy, a South Korean company Sehong is providing the 7.0 quake-proof lighting system solution called ‘Wireway’ that meets the government standards. 

Introducing world’s first 7.0 magnitude enduring lighting system recognized by ELSEVIER Journal of Building Engineering

Wireway is the world first’s quake-proof race way lighting system that endures 7.0 magnitude. It was introduced on the world famous Journal of Building Engineering, published by the Dutch ELSEVIER, for its unique damper pully technology. World’s first aside, Wireway is optimized for installing in complicated buildings such as basement garages, logistics centers and manufacturing factories. The installation is exposed on race way of the ceiling that absorbs the quake and shock. The SUS Wire, the control-excellence damper pully and the tension-adjustment device work together to endure 7.0 magnitude earthquake which was proven in a test carried out at the Busan National University Seismic Research and Test Center, an official accreditation center of the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme: Wireway satisfied the international standard ICC-ES AC156 on which it proved the endurance. Sehong has registered patents in both Korea and the US. At a comparison test on 20 meter duct section, Wireway proved enhanced performance for the existing 3 axis race way reinforcement-type quake-proof: the existing 3 axis race way proved to be warped, shaken this and that way, twisted, disassembled and out of the hold while the Wireway recovered its order rapidly after swinging a number of times when the quake stopped. This test is world’s first in its kind and it was to prove excellent seismic performance of Wireway on using catenary cable structure and also to point out the problems of the existing 3 axis race way reinforcement-type quake-proof that is used on the exposed ceilings of parking lots. 

One solution to hassling existing installation procedure

“Wireway boasts excellent quake-proofness, convenience, safety, economy and is looking good. Wireway solved many problems of the existing 3 axis race way method such as duct materials, standardization of the sizes, hassling ceiling installation that has different height building to building and also complicated facilities and equipment they involve. Wireway minimized vertical reinforcement and uses, instead, horizontal reinforcement to secure better sights for the ceiling for the installers to more easily and conveniently install the lighting system. In addition, Wireway is made to order to answer each different need and want of the use. The duct wiring is 

made and delivered one body type unit for the installers to link the horizontal wire to the aseismatic structures and then hang the duct unit to finish the installation. It also makes check-up and change easy. What is more? Wireway is 50% cost-effective based on acquisition cost and more than 30% cheaper in terms of installation, maintenance and disposal according to the Korea Price Research Center” explains Sungchan Kim, CEO of Sehong.

Wireway was listed in Good Design Korea 2021 and has been installed in 40 buildings including underground parking lots of apartments built by a construction company Taeyoung.
