Artist Hyangsu Park is famous for his drawing themed on black pines. In order to complete a work, thousands and some times tens of thousands of strokes of a pen and paint marker is needed and Park willingly takes it with passion. It is remarkable considering he is self-taught to realize such details.

Black pines endure harsh storms from the sea and for this solidness some fishermen have used it to make boats. Because they grow around the sea some people also call them as sea pines or black pines because the color of stem shell is darker than inland pines. 

Park pours a considerable amount of time in each work. Some works take more than a year to satisfy himself no matter how many times he had to give strokes of pen in aching fingers and hands.

"I prefer a pen to oil and acrylic because it gives more details to images I want to realize. Besides I like black pines for such a strong endurance and steadfastness. So, time and effort do not really matter for me considering the result I can see at the end" says Park.

He recently received the 2022 Korea Brilliant People & Brand Awards in the art and culture category. He is holding an invitational solo exhibition at the Maru Art Center, Insadong, Seoul, in May. <PowerKorea>
