Korea has been divided the North and the South since the Korean War in 1950. The two parties have walked different way economically and ideologically. While the South has grown to be the 10th economic power in the world, the North ranked 130th. Those who could not bear poverty anymore in the North have tried to escape to the South willingly taking the risk of death. South Korean government is systematically supporting defectors from North with shelters and living costs. However, the support does not cover their engagement in the society and ideally having a family. Thus booming is the matchmaking services specifically designed for North Korean defectors to settle down in South with a family.

[Arirang Matchmaking Services]
Arirang is the most famous and widely sung Korean folk song whether in North or South or in the world. Haekeong Yu, CEO of Arirang Matchmaking Services, took this iconic title of the song in her business name to emphasize we are all Koreans. Yu escaped the North to the South in 2004. She knew more than anyone else how hard for North Korean defectors to start a new life in the South and in an effort to help them opened a matching making services specifically designed for them. Since business is business and she had to compete with her rival service providers, she differentiated her services with all inclusive care from finding a right spouse to dating, wedding and after advice and help.

"I never say I guarantee a match. At the end of the day, an ideal match involves understanding each other and sharing the good or bad together. My role is to find a right spouse, help them progress and provide advice and support where necessary. In my experience, just one going out attaches the couple like they have known for life while more than ten going outs harvest nothing. In other words, I never force them just to receive fees for my services but take it as my own affairs" says Yu.

Before a matching, Yu goes through documents and profiles thoroughly to make sure they are who they are. Then she moves onto hobbies, likes and dislikes and such. As a professional in the industry, Yu values honesty and diligence above anything else as they are the two basic virtues to lead a good life.

Arirang Matchmaking Services has shined its name by standing alongside fellow winners of the 2019 Korea Brilliant People & Brand Awards, the Korea First World Best Awards 2020 and the 2021 Korea Consumer Awards. <PowerKorea>
