Spread of Omicron is faster than ever in South Korea. 36,362 people were infected on January 4, a record high since the pandemic hit the nation 2 years ago. Symptoms seem light compared to ancestor variants, a teenager died as a result of Omicron infection in Gwangju. Considering the speed of spread, the authority is predicting up to 100,000 infection a day before it starts to draw down curve. The government is running a flexible PCR testing to manage the explosive number of the infected and is asking people to wear mask at all times and to follow the quarantine rules as before.

[Unique]
Unique is a South Korean mask manufacturer famous for its brand Hugreen. Having built its presence in the market before the pandemic, the company became more famous by supplying masks at good price during the time where mask price was rocket high when the virus started to spread worldwide. A mask secured by the Public Procurement Service was 900 won ($0.75) but a mask circulated by private manufacturers was 4,000 won minimum up to 7,000 won. Meanwhile, Unique sold a Hugreen mask at the same price of the Public Procurement Service. Despite the price, the quality surpassed the expensive masks. As a result, 4,000 masks of Hugreen were sold within a minute every day.

"Back in the days, only 4 mask manufacturers had a quality test machine in the nation and one of them was us. I remember that mask manufacturers without the machine brought their masks to our factory to check the quality. What makes us most proud, however, is that those who recognized quality of Hugreen as much as our good business practice are still buying Hugreen" says Jaeki Choi, CEO of Unique.

[Design]
During the initial spread of the virus, most masks were in black or white. Then different colors started to appear. Today, a variety of masks are found on the market with different color, shape and design and some people wear it like a fashion item to carry on their body. Answering the demand, Unique also moved fast not only to introduce their own designed masks but selling other trendy brands such as ETICA, airdays, ibanari and ebe also. The Unique's own designed masks include the Hurangi, a tiger charactered mask, and Bong, a comedian Bongwon Lee advertises. They come in different size for both children and adult.

[Market Now]
"Despite our good business practice, we are actually suffering more financial difficulty than before the pandemic. This is because we sold masks at good price for one reason and approximately 100 masks manufacturers 2 years ago jumped to 3,000 for another reason. Around 1,000 of them have already closed business and around 1,500 of them are at tip of the closure. But the big blow came from the sinkhole drop of the raw materials price which we bought at reasonal price. Good news, however, is that Hugreen is still exported to the US, Canada, Australia, Saudi and Singapore with excellent reviews and it is also sold at Amazon" says Choi.

[Plans]
Unique is soon to open an online mask shopping mall and an offline mask store alongside pop up stores in department stores and marts. Meanwhile, a deal is on the table to sell Hugreen on ebay and two more deals are ongoing with companies in Hong Kong and China.

"The mall and store will not only sell masks but also gather needs and wants of consumers in the field. As masks are shifting from quarantine goods to fashion items, it is very important to read market trend" emphasizes Choi.

As a long term plan, Unique is also planning to start donations and volunteer activities for people in need. <PowerKorea>
