Moon congratulates opening of a metropolitan railway in Ulsan

President Moon paid a visit to Ulsan on December 28 to congratulate opening of a metropolitan railway. It is 47 years a metropolitan railway opens outside the capital region and the line connects Daegu - Gyeongju - Ulsan - Busan on a 142 kilometers long line. In his congratulatory speech, Moon said that the line would open an era for one economic zone in the southeastern part of the nation with 10 million people creating 49 trillion won ($413.8 billion) trade. Moon took the line from Ulsan Taehwa River to Busan Ilgwang in 37 minutes and encouraged staff. Three more lines are to be added by 2023: Bujeon - Masan, Busan - Yangsan - Ulsan, and southeast circle line. He pointed out the newly introduced line emits 15% carbon dioxide compared to diesel cars and 79% of power consumption compared to the existing KTX. He also pointed out Busan-Gyeongnam Mega City Government launching first half of 2022 that comes with support of the central government. 

"The southeastern region will be reborn as a single mega city when the new airport on Gadeokdo in 2029 alongside extension of Jungang Line between Dodam and Youngcheon, East Sea Central Line in 2023 and East Sea Northern Line in 2027. If the railway can connect the North, the southeastern region will be the traffic hub towards Eurasia which will take us half the time than sea roads to the Netherlands from Busan in 37 days from 60 days" said Moon.

Boarding the train with Moon, Busan National University student Yujoo Song said "I live in Ulsan and I had to change the lines three time on 2 to 3 hour length. Now I can reach my school within around an hour without a hassle of change and I'm just so grateful."

Hyundai Motor employee Jihoon Kim said "I live in Haedundae Busan and I had to commute to my company in Ulsan through a change which wasted my time a lot. Now the new line takes me to Ulsan at one go and it will greatly ease my rush hour fatigue."

The opening of the southeastern line is expected to realize passengers travel from the capital to Gangwon and South Gyeongsan provinces within 2 hours. <PowerKorea>
