Sensors are core parts of gadgets loaded with AI and big data. Global market research firm Markets and Markets reports yearly 9.23% growth of global sensor market predicting the sales around $22.5 billion in 2025. Sensors are getting smaller and smaller thanks to ever advancing micro electro mechanical systems based on which SoC (System On a Chip) is being widely used. *SoC is an integrated circuit that integrates all or most components of a computer or other electronic system.

Memschip is a South Korean sensor company that succeeded development of nation's first Temperature Humidity Sensor (THS20). THS20 is built by using silicon wafer-based semiconductor processing, thin film Pt sensing resister temperature sensor and polyimide dehumidifying materials-driven IDT structure humidity sensor. The size is ultra thin 4mm by 4.2mm but the area of detection is wide and the time of respond is fast.

"THS20 is a precision sensor loaded with cutting edge technologies such as metal to metal wafer bonding, accumulative multi-package, multi-sensor interface Roic and multi-PKG processing. It is an ultra small, super performing and low power consuming smart temperature humidity sensor" explains Memschip CEO Youngmin Kim.

Kim and his team are working on applying THS20 to various products with THS20 diaper as its first brainchild. The sensor is attached to the cover of diaper and it detects things happening on the diaper of a baby and sends the information including the temperature and humidity level to parents or babysitter on smart phone.

A report of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service shows around 40,000 babies visit clinic or hospital from diaper-caused rash and such troubles a year. A baby uses approximately 10 diapers a day and it is 300 a month. If added elderly who needed it also, the number of people using diapers are estimated around 320,000 in the nation.

"THS20 diaper will be designed to make this somewhat hassling management of diapers smart by using sensor technologies. In other words, parents or carers do not need to check diaper every now and then as THS20 sends information to smart phone for prompt action. THS20 will be detachable and reusable including the cover of diaper" says Kim and adds:

"The data on patterns and frequencies of a baby or an elderly is accumulated and used to provide customized actions and services. Parents, babysitters or carers either change it on receiving the information on their smart phone or use these patterns and frequencies to guide them to the toilet around the time."

Starting with THS20 diaper, Kim and his team is ambitious to expand product lines to environment and mobility. <PowerKorea>
