[Scallops]
Jaran Bay, Goseong County, South Gyeongsang Province, is recognized as an uncontaminated area of the sea by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Scallops cultivated in the area are very fresh and for this reason demand is high by gourmets and ordinaries alike nationwide. Some ardent food lovers take even bolder measures: driving down to that southern part of the Peninsula to taste even fresher scallops just caught from the offing.

[Nutritional Value]
Scallops are known to be rich in protein and minerals and to stimulate brain development, prevent osteoporosis and anemia, and strengthen liver function.

[Biryeong Susan]
The current under Jaran Bay is not fast, the temperature is ideal, and protein and minerals are rich for scallops to play and grow. 30 fishery households are belonging to the Goseong Scallops Community and they harvest yearly 3,840 tons with 14 billion won ($11.6 million) sales, and 53.2% goes to Japan. Unhoe Gu, CEO of Biryeong Susan, has been cultivating marine products for three generations and is proud to grow and sell premium quality fresh scallops to the people in the nation as well as those who know the taste overseas. He points out that 95% of scallops are being cultivated in the coastlines of South Gyeongsang Province of which 70% in Goseong County alone.

[Support Needed]
Cultivating scallops is a business that needs financial and administrative support. In this respect, Gu is rather regretful of the government’s selective support of subsidy: fishermen in the county pays 30% of the eco-friendly buoys while neighboring parts of the province 20%. He also points out cooperation between fishermen, Suhyup MFI and and the local government in order to stabilize the price of scallops. He says that Suhyup buys all scallops cultivated and sells on behalf of the fishermen and this way, fishermen can only concentrate on growing fresh scallops while consumers buy fresh scallops at rational price.
