South Korean SNNT expands its industrial fuel cell technologies to home and commercial use

[Emerging Eco-Friendly Energy Market]
Climate change, global warming, eco-friendliness and carbon neutrality are the words commonly appeared on the media today. What all these words say is that our earth’s patience for humans’ destruction of nature has reached its end and it is sending a strong message to humans to do something or die together otherwise. Among many pollutants, carbon dioxide is singled out as one of the key factors of pollution and many countries in the world have rolled up sleeves in reducing it with Carbon Neutrality plans and implementations. Amid this global movement, hydrogen fuel cell is rising fast as a promising energy alternative to fossil fuel and coals and companies with original technologies are struggling to take a better seat in this emerging market. According to Fuji Keizai report, the global fuel cell market will reach around 50 trillion won ($42 billion) in 2030. 

[SNNT]
SNNT (Synergy of Never Ending Challenge for Happiness & Technology) is a South Korean fuel cell developer established in 2015. The company has core technologies in fuel processing, hydrogen manufacturing device design, production and absorption materials that can collect or remove valuable metal, heavy metal and ionic pollutants. SNNT targets to make high efficient and low energy type fuel convertors and fuel reformers in the field of fuel cell extract hydrogen generators, and succeeded development of a fuel reformer equipped with self-developed energy supply adjustable combustion-applied burner and low energy type catalyst system. 

[Capability]
SNNT boasts its capability and pride with customized manufacturing knowhow, multiple fuel use, various reforming technologies, mixed gas manufacturing technology, PEMFC natural gas vapor reforming fuel convertor, PEMFC LPG autogenous reforming fuel convertor, natural gas vapor reformer for SOFC system, natural gas enclosed type burner for SOFC system, vapor carbon dioxide mixture reforming technology for GTL, and SMR/ATR/POX-responsive metal monolith reforming catalyst. Not complacent, SNNT has been carrying on its passionate research and development on metal monolith catalyst technology, lean-burn combustion technology, parts standardization and extract hydrogen generator models. Business-wise, the company offers services to clients through the 5 step procedure: extract – design – manufacturing – test and supply. 

[Priority]
With this technology competitiveness, SNNT lays a greater focus on small and large extract hydrogen generators with even more focus on the former. In fact, the company is leading the small extract hydrogen generators that come in a number of types: vertical channel, horizontal block and vertical block. These types use LPG, methanol and ethanol as their power and they can be installed in home or commercial facilities according to its purpose. As for the large extract hydrogen generators, SNNT has 35Nm3/hr and 75Nm3/hrDME that can generate about 70kg hydrogen. It is the amount to charge around 20 Hyundai NEXO a day. The company targets to introduce 500Nm3/hr with expanded fuel compatibility (LPG, ADG, LFG, used plastic gasification) by the end of 2022 to secure firm of its presence in the field.

[Patents]
SNNT has obtained a number of patents in gas fuel reforming and liquid fuel reforming. As for gas fuel reforming, the company has 1kW gas vapor reforming extract hydrogen generator in types of reforming reactor and separated burner. In addition to the first and second generation models, the company succeeded development of the one-body type third generation model and obtained its test report from the Korea Institute of Energy Research. The third model recently has been upgraded to 2kW. As for liquid fuel reforming, SNNT has 35Nm3/hr-level methanol vapor reforming extract hydrogen generator and 1Nm3/hr-level ethanol vapor reforming extract hydrogen generator. Apart from gas and liquid, the company also boasts stack off gas-included multiple fuel enclosed combustion burner development technologies. At the 2021 H2 Mobility + Energy Show held at KINTEX from September 8 to 11, the company displayed and demonstrated these excellent technologies and left a strong impression to both buyers and visitors.

[Prospect]
South Korea has global competitiveness in automotive and generator fuel cell but not in home and commercial use. Japan, for example, is ahead of South Korea in this particular field. Knowing this very well, SNNT is sharing fair amount of its R&D capability in this rather un-explored field homeland. According to Jangsik Shin, CEO of SNNT, this will diversify energy options in South Korea from the near monopoly city gas system to hydrogen generator that can be conveniently installed in homes and buildings of remote villages. SNNT targets the year 2025 to go public by achieving yearly sales of around 98 billion won ($82 million). (PowerKorea)
