(PowerKorea) President Moon delivered the keynote address at the 76th Session of United Nations General Assembly held on September 21. Moon is the first South Korean president who has attended the general assembly 5 times in a row. In the speech, he emphasized peace in the Korean Peninsula and South Korea’s leading role in the international society.

He asked the international society to gather strength for end of war declaration in the Korean Peninsula and suggested a declaration by South, North and US or by South, North, US and China. He said that he believed that complete peace starts from this end of war declaration alongside denuclearization. 

Moon pointed out that North should prepare for the changes that benefit global community, and cooperation would bring forth meeting of separated families and quarantine in East North Asia. He added winning COVID-19 means breaking the borders and the reborn of global community so we must work together and gather our wisdom. 

Moon emphasized that we need to focus on inclusive recovery from the pandemic and on 2030 Sustainable Development Goals through which we leave no one behind, and South Korea will play a leading role through Korean New Deal and Human New Deal especially in the sectors of green, digital and health.

Moon brought up South Korea’s 2050 Carbon Neutrality which has been legalized of its vision and implementation and accentuated that South Korea will raise the 2030 NDC on the occasion of the COP 26 held in November. He boasted that South Korea is making Green New Deal as an opportunity to grow new industries and to create new jobs and the Green New Deal fund will support GGGI (Global Green Growth Initiative) while its technologies and capabilities will be shared with developing countries. 

Moon showed his ambition to hold 2023 COP 28 in Seoul by using his experience of successfully holding the P4G Seoul Summit and hoped that South Korea will play a proactive role in dealing with climate change. 

Moon informed that 2021 Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial is held December this year and it will be an opportunity for international society to work in close cooperation. Moon also showed his will to make for 2024/2025 Non-Permanent Members of the United Nations Security Council. 

Moon meets with Guterres

President Moon met Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, on September 21 at a meeting room on the 27th floor of the United Nations Secretariat. The two leaders exchanged opinions on peace in the Korean Peninsula and global crisis. 

Guterres thanked Moon and BTS for a successful SDG Moment and congratulated him. He said that South Korea and UN are in a good cooperation model and South Korea is contributing to peace, security, sustainable development, human rights and climate change. He showed his will of support for peace in the Korean Peninsula. 

Moon congratulated Guterres for his consecutive terms and asked him to remember that he (Moon) is the first South Korean president to attend the general assembly 5 times in a row. Moon showed his thanks to Guterres for his support for him (Moon) and BTS in the SDG Moment. 

Moon added that it has been 30 years since the two Koreas joined the UN and Guterres answered that the 30th anniversary will be a momentum to bring peace and future in the Korean Peninsula.
