(PowerKorea) Commercial livestock farms have had an issue of bad smell around the areas. It not only damages health of the cattle and the farmers but complaints are pouring in from residents living around the vicinity. Some advanced countries regulated the farmers to spread the manure within the limited area of the farmland and some other countries ban the farming when it crosses the border of the allowed distance. According to some experts, however, these methods cannot be sustainable solutions as they have certain limits to control the odor.

South Korea started to enforce the compulsory decomposed manure test from March 25 this year. All farmers who run a livestock farm with a certain size must take the test during the specified period. It is estimated that 49,030 livestock farmhouses are affected by the test and they are as followed: 1) subject to report: cow farming on a 100m²~900m² areas, pig on 50m²~1000m², poultry on 200m²~3000m². 2) subject to permit: cow on 900m², pig on 1000m² and poultry on 3000m². Farmers who do not take the test will get a 1 million won ($897) fine and the manure that does not meet the standard will get a 2 million won fine. Those who farm less than 22 Korean cattle (264m²), 10 cows (120m²) and 115 pigs (161m²) are exempt of the test.

“Decomposed manure test is to check whether the manure or liquefied manure reacts to the plants and the soil within the safety guideline. If the decomposing was not processed properly, the ammonia in the manure can damage the crops and spread bad smell around the area” says Jeong Sang-gyo, CEO of SG Bio.

CEO Jeong played an important role at a waterproof development project of a nuclear power plant in the past and made a strong presence in the industrial machine processing and development with the rise and full system type structure. It was 5 years ago Jeong started to have interest in environmental pollution caused by the manure. Thus established was SG Bio in 2020 in Haman County, South Gyeongsang Province.

SG Bio’s innovative ‘odor-killer’ is an express fermenting dryer that reduces amount of organic sludge and remaining of fishes and shells, vegetables and livestock manure. Odor-killer does not produce liquid discharge and the odor is processed by the pipe so it does not spread.

“Odor-killer is fast in fermentation and reduces the percentage of the sludge to 30 to 35% from 80 to 85%. It takes only around 18 to 24 hours to make it into fermented fertilizer which will be rich in nitrogen, phosphoric acid and kalium. Farmers are not required to ready separate sterilization equipment. Odor-killer can also prevent outbreak of infectious diseases such as African swine fever virus and foot-and-mouth disease. In addition, it can process placenta or corpses of the cattle in convenient way. Farmers receiving up to 40 to 50% local government subsidy is just a bonus” says Jeong.

In fact, a corpse processing test proved that a 22 hour running with 4 hour fermentation completely removed placenta with no finding of colon bacillus and salmorella thanks to the temperature going up more than 80¡É during the procedure.

“In a word, order-killer is not only treat the manure effectively but also the sludge and food waste which then can be recycled through fermentation process to be used as rich fertilizer” says Jeong.
