(PowerKorea) Back in the days, Korean musicians gathered together at a salon called ‘pungryu bang’. ‘Pungryu’ means appreciation for the arts and ‘bang’ means room. They played various instruments such as zither, fiddle, flute and drums alongside folk or narrative songs. Passing this tradition, Pungryu in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, is a place where locals gather together to learn and practice traditional Korean songs and musical instruments and also participate concerts. Especially for children, Pungryu runs one day class, Korean opera class and children music project.
Pungryu has made presence in the field by collaborating performance in various concerts including 3 Persons 3 Colors, Young Korean Classical Musicians Concert, 2019 Literary Concert, Korean Classical Music with Jo Yoon Bum, and Walking Together at Yungsan Yangjae Hall.
While Jeong So-rae serves the CEO, sister Jeong Na-rae is a bamboo flute player and they are the driving force of Pungryu. Jeong So-rae especially is National Intangible Asset No.1 in royal ancestral rites music as well as Seoul Intangible Asset No.44 in hyunyookgak. She majored in traditional Korean music at Busan National University and currently is on the doctoral course in traditional Korean musicology at the same university. She also teaches students as an outside professor at the university and published <Beginner’s Fiddle> May last year which became a bestseller.
The sisters visit local elderly and senior care centers time to time to play for them and donate rice and daily necessities to neighbors in need.
