(PowerKorea) President Moon attended the 102nd March 1 Movement ceremony held at Tapgol Park in Jongno District, Seoul where the movement was initiated back in 1919.

Major League baseball player Ryu Hyun-jin read the Pledge of Allegiance to the national flag onscreen and 170 globally known Korean sport players sung the national anthem together.

The Declaration of Independence was read by 7 people of disabled, translators and offspring of independence movement activists including Jennifer Taylor daughter of AP special correspondent Albert Taylor who reported the movement to the world and Oisi Sesemu grandson of Tatsuji Fuse who received South Korean Order of Merit for National Foundation for defending the Korean Youth Independence Corp member Yeol Park.

275 independence patriots received prizes on the day of which 7 were awarded Order of Merit for National Foundation and Presidential Citation from Moon.

Follow is excerpts from Moon’s speech:

Korean’s willpower and devotion have never once been changed 100 years ago and now. The power Koreans fighting against COVID-19 today is but the spirit of devotion and sacrifice of our ancestors 100 years ago who fought against Spanish flue. Behind this fighting spirit is the spirit of Korean tolerance and cooperation. Watching my fellow citizens wearing mask and following quarantine rule makes me confirm that it must have come from the very spirits of the movement.

As to prove it, South Korea has made the top 10 global economic power from the scratch. South Korea ranked the 7th export powerhouse and has long surpassed 30,000 dollar per capita income. South Korea is to attend the G7 this year and we will erect yet another milestone in our history.

We should learn from the past but must not linger on the past in the way of making a better future. We should focus on spirits of independence, democracy, tolerance, and open ways for innovative advancement. The world is watching us and we will boldly march forward through rough seas.
The event followed quarantine rule and number of attendees were limited to minimum.
