According to reference.com, the population of the world is 7.2 billion and about 70 percent of them are working. This gives a figure of about 5 billion jobs are in the world. Among these 5 billion jobs, actors share just a mere part in numbers. Yet, many people especially young ones want to be an actor as actors are looked up by majority of the people.
Every year, ambitious young ones are knocking doors of acting academies and management agents in the world. However, like many other counties in the world, these academies and agents are crammed into big cities and it is Seoul, the capital city, in South Korea.
In this respect, Mask Acting & Musical Academy in Jinju City, South Gyeongsang Province, is worth paying an attention. Jo Hae-rim, director of the academy, liked playing the piano since she was a child. But her mother found out her talent in acting and encouraged her to turn the course. She did, took a course, and won a prize at a competition which convinced both her mother and herself. She made for Myongji University in acting and musical major and pushed her study to Chung-Ang University Graduate School of Art.
"I opened an acting academy in Seoul after graduation and one of my students traveled all the way up to Seoul from Jinju to learn acting. I asked why you do it and he said there is no acting school in Jinju. I felt like I was hammered because I know how hard it is to practice acting and prepare exams at the same time. So I decided to relocate the academy in Jinju. That was 2017" says Jo.
After a certain amount of time struggling to settle down the business, Jo started recruiting instructors with academic background from Myongji University, Dongguk University and the University of Suwon who are now passionately teaching students acting, script analysis, contemporary dance, singing, musical and job interview. As the words are spreading fast in the city and over, ambitious young ones are traveling from all over South Gyeongsang Province such as Namhae, Hamyang, Samcheonpo and Sancheong.
"It is harsh to say but students must go through at least 2 years of practice to pass a only 3 minute audition in real world. But I and my team are confident with our figure that more than 90% of our students passed auditions thanks to their hard work and our attention to detail training."
"It is important to find out whether you actually have a talent in acting. Acting is a field where you cannot make yourself recognized without a talent and you might waste your time on it otherwise. We can help on this also and if we found you certainly have a talent, you are on the right track with us."
Mask Acting & Musical Academy opened the first branch in Daegu in 2018 and another one in Pohang last year. PowerKorea.
