¡ã Artist You Mi-sook

“My mother has gone far away leaving only the bowls and plates she used for 50 years. I paint my heart on her bowls and plates. I paint it with my heart and soul like she made delicious food. And my mother is in there. Painting is an endless work and mother is always beside me.”  - Artist’s note –

Artist You Mi-sook is famous for bowls and plates her mother used for a long time. The attached plates create a harmony between 2 and 3 dimensional canvas. Flowers, bees, butterflies and birds gather together onto colorful plates. Rock climbing, paragliding and jumping appear on the scenes, the activities her getting-by-busy mother wished to do so ardently.

You’s works are mother’s dream and hope and the artist’s life itself. <Mother’s Table> displayed at the Art Gwangju 19 last year attracted a considerable attention and the solo exhibition held at the Jeollanamdo Office Yun Seon Do Hall this April touched many hearts of appreciators. 30 of her works themed on mother’s dream and life created a wave of sympathy.

“People who I never met came into my booth and held my hands warmly after seeing my works with understating nod and it made me feel overwhelmed. It was a great encouragement” says You.

You’s mother ran a chicken restaurant for 50 years. She often said to her children “Do whatever you want as I have no time to do what I want.” You thought her mother would live with her forever but she has gone. But not only she left her heartbroken but also her finger marked bowls and plates she used for so long.

You’s older sister wanted to remove them but You could not do it for some reason. You then realized that the bowls and plates were the love and sacrifice of her mother for their children.

The signboard ‘Chungsol Garden’ is still hanging on the restaurant and some people still come to have a meal not knowing it is now being used as You’s art studio.

Noh Ui-woong, curator of No Ui Woong Gallery, said “You is unique in her style and media. I want to call her a magician of colors. Not only this, she has brilliant ideas and ability to express objects realistically that can hardly compare with anyone.”

You is having her third solo exhibition at Thinking Box Gallery Gwangju from Step 17 to Oct 14. Themed on Mother’s Table, she is displaying 30 works made with plate objects and acrylic.
