Artificial Intelligence is one of the core technologies in the 4th Industrial Revolution. Talking of AI, many people might think of Apple. Indeed, the voice recognition ‘siri’ surprised the world by pioneering the way to the world of AI. Many geniuses are working for Apple and proving their virtuoso by wowing the world with cutting edge tech driven devices. And one of these virtuosos was Nokwon Kim, now CEO of DeepX.
Kim established DeepX in South Korea February 2018 and in Silicon Valley Seattle US in August the same year. In 2019, he succeeded development of NPU, a deep learning accelerator processor customized for IoT and edge devices.
He applied 10 related patents home and abroad the same year and invited investments from Shinhan Bank, Capstone Partners, Pathfinder H, Magna Investment, and Hyundai Zero One Fund.
Serving as a chief research for Apple, he developed the application processor that was used for iPhone X and iPhone XS. The reason he quit Apple to establish DeepX was to bring advancement to IoT that can make our life easier and more convenient than ever.
NPU is received as a pioneering technology that will lead the age of AI. As a non-memory semiconductor processing device, NPU is optimized for deep learning calculation. It is received as a device that overcame the drawbacks of AI calculation of the existing CPU.
Kim targets to offer NPU at 1/10 of the existing market price with 100 times more energy efficiency intact. It is his goal to advance the performance of NPU to the level of all-applicable from tiny IoT devices to massive devices.
In recognition of its contribution to the industry, DeepX received the 2020 Brilliant People & Brand Awards in the AI semiconductor category. The awards were held by Herald Group and managed by monthly <PowerKorea>.
