The 74th anniversary of Liberation Day ceremony was held at the Independence Hall of Korea in Cheonan City on 15th August. 1,800 people of all walks of life attended on the day and it was 15 years that the ceremony was held at the Independence Hall.

Under the theme ‘The Light We Found Back, The Road We Light Up Together’, the ceremony invited singer Dongwan Kim onto the stage to recite the Pledge of Allegiance followed by singing of the national anthem by a choir consisted of offspring, and overseas families, of independence activists and the chorus of the Defense Ministry.

President Moon took the stage to reward prizes to 5 out of the total 178 independence patriots who received prizes on the day. Unho Baek was the sole living prize winner who joined a secret death squad and arrested and suffered by the Japanese.

“I assured myself to make contribution to building a strong nation by responsible and free trade economic policies, by bridging the lands and seas between the continents and by establishing the Peace Economy” said Moon and added:

“It is notable that despite the recent missile launches of the North, the US and the North are continuing the dialogue and Japan also is wishing to have a talk with the North. I’m determined to do my best to make One Korea by 2045, the year we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Liberation Day.”

Moon meets Ahmed

President Moon and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had a summit on 26th August. The two leaders shared the same view on the need for expanding substantial cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, development, environment and forestry. They also agreed to find ways for cooperation through the ministerial level joint committee.

“It is meaningful that you are the first African Prime Minister we receive. Ethiopia is the sole African country who sent its ground forces ‘Kagnew’ who fought alongside the South during the Korean War. So we must show our gratitude to you” said Moon and added:

“South Korea and Ethiopia are now working together for peace and it is encouraging that Ethiopia is leading the arbitration for the conflicts in South Sudan as well as signing the peace agreement with Eritrea. Also, it is notable that Ethiopia is experiencing dynamic development and high economic growth rate. I hope that your visit to Seoul will raise the level of cooperation between the two countries one step further.”

Mr. Ahmed answered “Ethiopia and South Korea are sharing a part of history and we are working to learn the development model of South Korea. I hope we raise our status as a strategic partnership so that we can strengthen our cooperation and relations.”

After the summit, the two leaders signed 5 documents including visa exemption agreement for diplomats and public officials and a loan for building a research center of Adama Science and Technology University in Ethiopia.
