Mokwon University in Daejeong Metropolitan City was opened in 1945 as a Methodist seminary. It added the department of music education in 1969 and of Art Education in 1972 with which it started to appear as a leader university of art and culture in the central regions of South Korea. To make it more professional, the university opened the Art and Culture Academy May this year.

The role of the academy is to lay an art and cultural platform through which a variety of creative contents and promotional events are made. It is notable that its art and culture CEO course is run by renowned professors and figures of our society including former Yonsei University philosophy professor Hyungsuk Kim, Chung-Ang University music professor Jaehwan Lee, Hongik University architecture professor Wonjae Lee, former SBS Art Company director Jeongtaek Kim and former Daejeon mayor Hongchul Yeom.

The course is run alongside workshops on various subjects as well as cultural tours and music performances. For this, the academy joined hands with Seoul Solist Ensemble and has secured various art and cultural contents.

Apart from her director’s role, Seo is serving as the president of the alumni of which its music department once donated 20 million won (USD 16,977 as of June 6, 2019) as scholarship to the university. Also, she initiated the Chungnam National University Hospital Choir and is organizing performances on a regular basis for inpatients.

“I believe art and culture are the driving force of changing our society for better even in this age of AI. This is because so called technology revolution might have not been possible without an artistic and cultural mind where the ideas and the actions of ‘creativity’ derived. In this respect, the Mokwon University Art and Culture Academy will take part in promoting more art and culture events and programs in the coming years.”
