¡ã Yoo Min-seok

What makes artist Yoo Min-seok unique is his trying of combining the traditional concept of art with the fun of animation. He invites familiar animation characters Tom and Jerry to his work to throw a question on the matter of our existence. The idea of this work is that art does not necessarily mean that it is difficult but should be enjoyed with daily subjects and materials over conventional subjects and materials.

This idea of Yoo started from a shocking remark of her daughter one day: he gave a flower in her hand but she threw it away saying “The flower here (on smartphone) is real.” He gave a deep thought about the remark and reached to a certain conclusion: it is true children nowadays get more familiar with the digital devices and it might not be a big surprise that they sometimes feel the things they see in the digital devices more real than the reality.

The work of Yoo depicts a scene that Tom and Jerry chase each other like hide-and-seek between the objects such as coffee cup and wine glass. The coffee cup and wine glass are the existential media and Tom and Jerry are the virtual. The virtual media are gradually dominating the existential media and the result is that the real world gets denied. Yoo’s intension, therefore, is to throw a question on the matter of our existence in relation to the virtual world.

Meanwhile, he is the owner of the gallery café Two Hands located in the underground of Blue Square Interpark Hall in Itaewon. He uses this space as his own studio, an exhibition room for fellow artists and a café for visitors. Yoo also sells art materials including the famous Netherland’s paints at this gallery café.

Yoo graduated from Hongik University (bachelor and master) and studied in Canada where he carefully observed the trend of modern art and its beauty. During the university years, he showed a great interest in stage management and mural paintings while built extensive experience and career as an artist in Canada.

At the gallery cafe, he makes the most of his knowledge in art materials from choosing the right materials to using them right for junior artists and pupils through a special lecture held every now and then.

He thinks that good art works require quality materials which of course are expensive but the normal people’s lack of understanding about this makes the art market harder to advance in terms of quality.

Yoo’s works have been displayed in a number of overseas exhibitions including Canada, Japan, India, China, Hong Kong and the US. Quite recently, he joined the 2018 Korea Art Festival International Art Fair held at KINTEX, Ilsan, and attracted a share of attention.

As for now, he is taking care of the solo exhibition of his junior artist Kim Min-ji at Fill Gallery in Hannam-dong, Yongsan District, Seoul. Artist Kim expresses young people’s dream through the classical cars such as Porsche and Ford. Kim also has participated in a number of exhibitions home and abroad including the Seoul Art Show, and Singapore.

Alongside supporting Kim, Yoo is busy working on developing his Tom and Jerry into a video work which will be displayed at his solo exhibition in Jeonju City, December this year; he intends to break the border between the worlds of analogue and digital and reality and virtual.
