¡ã Mugunghwa Artist Kim Ji-young

Art connects proud Koreans of the past to the present
Artist Kim Ji-young is known as Mugunghwa artist. Mugunghwa (rose of Sharon) is the national flower of Korea symbolizing national spirit and integrity. It is noteworthy that the Japanese in the colonial era banned Koreans planting this flower for 36 years. From June 12 to August 5, Mugunghwa artist Kim Ji-young held her 14th special invitational exhibition at Jung Jun Ho Gallery in Busan to continue her zeal of promoting national consciousness through the flower; not only the national flowers alone fired patriotism, however, but also a number of renowned Korean people within the works such as Sejong the Great, Ryu Gwan-sun, An Jung-geun, Ahn Chang-ho, Kim Gu, Kim Yu-na, Jo Su-mi, PSY, Chung Myung-whun, Chung Kyung-Wha and Chung Myung-wha. She also applied this time some of the famous Korean paintings in history to the flowers by overlapping the images. “A parody in art can mean to re-create the original into something new. For me personally, it is a process of visualizing space and environment which we can share beyond time” says Kim.

“History was made right here, right at this very place we live in today”
Style-wise, Kim’s mugunghwa works are unique in their own terms. Her brushwork might new to those who first appreciate the works but the artist’s intention is clearly notable: to make communication with the appreciators. Kim’s passion in art has been so great that for the last 30 years of her artistic career, she has joined more than 350 times of invitational and group exhibitions including her largest ever work sized around 6.5m x 8m in 2013. “I wanted to emphasize my message that the proud Koreans in history are not someone who made the history in a space different from where we live today but right here, right at this very place we are standing. Traces of their lives are but traces of our lives, our history, our pain and our love today.”

Promoting gender equality
As a woman artist, Kim was very much affected by unequal treatment of women by their fellow men in our society. Her master’s degree paper <Pictorial Meaning of Mungunghwa, Feminism and Gender Inequality>, for this reason, is well worth reading for she points out the important roles of women for the advancement of our future society. Some say that many women have a job nowadays but it still needs a greater improvement when it comes to child rearing and house chores, experts voice together. As for an artist’s role, Kim mingles persuasively rose of Sharon and women in her works in order to raise public awareness on gender inequality. “I am an artist and at the same time a woman. I cannot just ignore this long time historic malpractice of unequal treatment towards women. So I will keep exercising my diligence in delivering a strong and firm message regarding gender inequality through my works.”
