“Double Inlaid Technique is the secret of my ceramic works”
Lee Woo-yup, Director of Woodoye Workshop

Master ceramist Lee Woo-yup is famous for his reversed ceramic making method: ‘paint cinnamon soil first’; the common method of making Goryeo Inlaid Celadon is ‘groove first’. Lee majored in design at Dankook University Graduate School. He turned his career to ceramic art thereafter and trained himself hard for 10 years at a workshop in Wanju County. He developed the unique ‘Double Inlaid Technique’ on which he realized the perfection he desired. Like many ceramists, Lee breaks away the work with even a minute fault but makes himself different from others by using sculpting technique and the color variance between black and white clays. The inspiration came when he was hanging around with his friend and saw a market merchant selling melons. The geometric patterns of the fruit captivated his eye and he applied it to his inlaid design through this process: plastering black clay – plastering white clay in 5mm thickness – drying in shade for 2 to 3 days – drawing the patterns – carving the patterns; the process normally takes at least a month. The cobweb-like patterns make a harmony on the surface of oriental double inlaid ceramics is unique and beautiful, says Lee. “I wanted to make my own technique and style so that people could recognize my works like they recognize the works of Lee Jung-seob, Park Su-geun and Chun Gyeong-ja.” Lee opened Woodoye Workshop in Ajung-ri, Jeonju City in 2005. He has won bronze, participation and special selection prizes at the Grand Exhibition of Jeonbuk Craftwork and displayed his work in the Ongoeul Art Exhibition. The scope of his works covers from gourd bottles and bowls to plates, jars and kettles. His first solo exhibition held at Jeonju Craftwork Exhibition Center in June 2012 attracted a great attention from visitors and he passionately promoted the excellence of his works through more than 30 group and invitational exhibitions thereafter. Apart from his career as a ceramic artist, Lee has been giving lectures at schools and universities as well as local cultural centers with a hope to foster talented potters and ceramic artists. He points out the fact that a ceramic work can be art but it can also be used in daily life. For this reason, he produces eco-friendly potteries for restaurants in Jeonju Hanok Village on a regular basis. Lee gives a considerable amount of time to realize the patterns, shapes, colors and gradation effect he desired and he is determined to deepen the technique for the next exhibition. When asked about the future plan, Lee said that he hoped to have an overseas exhibition in near future.
