“My works are not about great philosophies or theories but the media to deliver joy and happiness to the viewers.”
Artist Kim Yong-nam

“I find inspiration from nature. Nature is beautiful and touches me and gives me energy. I think people can find peace and rest in paintings. People use freedom of imagination to create art works and the art works refine our minds. In this respect, my works are not about great philosophies or theories but the media to deliver joy and happiness to the viewers.” – Artist’s note –

Kim is famous artist for flowers. She often uses wisteria blossoms, camellia, azalea, trumpet creeper and wild chrysanthemum and quite recently drew <Lake with Iris> and <Afternoon on Rose Garden>. Kim picks up the brush to deliver nature as it is. “Seeing the petals falling on the canvas of nature makes me exciting. Watching the work of nature in a variety of colors is truly marvelous and it touches my heart. I can’t help but I have to shift this beautiful nature onto my canvas” said Kim. Art critic Shin Hang-sup said “Kim pays attention to the changes of colors to make them clear in tone and shape. It is a process that requires a considerable amount of time and effort. She has deep understanding on things and tries to communicate with them over observing.” Kim developed her style from naturalism to romanticism to impressionism to realism. She travelled Russia and Silk Road in China for inspiration. She studies the shape, volume and depth of the object but pours her own personality when it comes to depiction. Plastic art doctor Lee Bong-soon said “I’ve met her in many places where art is happening. She doesn’t seem to be a person of show off but seem to play an important role in the art world. Maybe this is because she has a heart to respect other artists’ personalities and thus different styles. I think she values ‘the attitude of life’ very highly. She sees things in the world with attentive eye and records them in detail. The reason she likes flowers might ascribes to her tendency to natural things.” Kim worked as an art teacher at middle and high schools and ran an art academy. She recently moved her base to Daejeon City and is running a gallery alongside her own works in her studio. She hung her large sized work (280cm x 200cm) on the wall of the gallery. Her husband is providing unsparing support for her to concentrate on her works. “He often says that keeping one’s health comes first which makes me put down the brush for a rest and a walk. The reason I can still do what I love, in a way, is because I met my husband.”
