“We will bring back the former glory of Bugok Hot Spring”
Nam Young-sup, President of Bugok Hot Spring Tourism Association / CEO of Hansung Hotel

The Bugok Hot Spring once attracted yearly 4 million visitors but closed the business May last year. A short history of the hot spring is that it was found by a man named Shin Hyun-chaek in 1973. The temperature was about 78¡É and the daily yield of the well was about 6,000 tons. It is sulfur alkaline and contains 20 kinds of minerals. The hot spring is known to be good for respiratory and skin diseases and removing active oxygen in the body. According to the Korea Functional Water Society, the test proved that the hot spring was effective to remove active oxygen in the body, recover the skin damages and slow aging. The Bugok Hot Spring Tourism Association has been trying hard to bring the former glory back to the region by reactivating the hot spring in connection with the regional tourist and leisure attractions such as Upo Wetland and the Sports Park as well as the Changnyeong Sports Center. In fact, Changnyeong County signed a MOU with the Gyeongnam Development Corporation in 2016 to promote the tourism and drew 1,300 Chinese tourists to Upo Wetland while yearly 60,000 to 70,000 athletes have a workshop or training at the Changnyeong Sports Center. “We have to work together to reactivate the hot spring and to promote the regional tourism by making the most of what we have” says Nam Young-sup, President of Bugok Hot Spring Tourism Association. Thanks to the years of hard work, the Changnyeong Bugok Hot Spring Tourism Zone is attracting a great number of visitors especially in winter. “About 10,000 athletes from 57 teams visited the zone from January to March this year and we are targeting 60,000 from around 200 teams by the end of the year.” The county has poured KRW 30 billion won in development of the facilities in the zone. It is estimated that yearly 5 billion won direct economic effect is being created but tens of billions of won when included indirect economic effect. Also, the 24 hotels and motels are boldly investing in remodeling or maintenance and you might have to book in advance for the weekends. The recovery of the regional economic activation naturally has raised the interest of outsider investors and the county is trying hard to maximizing the momentum by holding various events and festivals such as the Bugok Hot Spring Marathon, the 3.1 Traditional and Cultural Festival and the 25th Bugok Hot Spring Festival (April 6-8). “Most importantly, excellent customer services must be practiced at all times. Not matter how good the facilities are, visitors won’t come back again if the services are poor” says Nam.
