“Children should learn, play and grow in nature”
Kim Jeong-hwa, President of Korean Association of Forest Kindergarten
The Korean Association of Forest Kindergarten was established in 2010. It borrowed the idea of forest education in Europe and changed it for Korean environment. “I was engaged in the activities of the Korean Society For Eco Early Childhood Education led by Busan National University professor Im Jae-taek and grew my interest in eco-friendly education environment. The forest education in fact has been well received in Korea for the last 10 years and many educators are still traveling to Europe and keep introducing the methods to Korea. But if we think carefully, mountains cover 70% of the land in Korea and our ancestors naturally taught their children in forests” says Kim Jeong-hwa, President of the Korean Association of Forest Kindergarten. In other words, Kim emphasizes on the need for adopting the methods customized to the Korean environments. As part of this effort, the association is circulating ‘Korean Forest Education Guideline’ to promote forest education for earl childhood. Also, the association is running instructor’s course, building networks for members and promoting sustainable cooperation between the forest education organizations. In fact, the association is the sole forest education organization supported by the Korea Forest Service and they are carrying out a number of programs including ‘forest fire prevention campaign’ twice a year and ‘forest kindergarten and forest early childhood education exhibition’ every June. “According to a research, safety accident can happen more when children play indoor than outdoor. The research also tells us that forest education can improve children’s physical strength and health. It is also notable that forests clean the air themselves and children can breathe cleaner air in forests than indoor.” Kim’s years of professional knowledge and experience in forest education and her capability were well received by Daegu City. Under the support of the city, Kim launched ‘Village Forest Project’ through which she has found 43 forest resting areas in villages for the last 5 years. Recognizing the excellence of the project, Seoul City adopted it and is running the same project at the moment. If you have a child or two and feel the need for forest education, you are encouraged to contact the association for helpful advice.
