“Zither boasts 1,700 years of history and has been loved by many people noble and common alike”
Baek Mi-gyeong, Director of Sorihyang Gayageum
Baek Mi-gyeong, Director of Sorihayng Gayageum, is the national intangible cultural asset No.44. She won the 2017 National Assembly Leadership Awards for her contribution to spreading the beauty of gayageum (Korean zither). She majored in Korean music and obtained a master’s degree at Yeungnam University. She learned the instrument from Ji Soon-ja, the Gyeongsangbukdo intangible cultural asset No.19 (gayageum singing initiator) and Ju Young-hee, Gyeongsangbukdo intangible cultural asset No.19 (gayageum singing holder). Baek has fostered about 3,000 talented Korean zither players since 2004 and has held twice or three times performances every month. She is leading the Madam Sorihyang (consisting of housewives) and is giving lectures at various culture centers. She obtained culture and art instructor’s certificate, music teacher’s certificate and music psychology certificate and produced talented student zither players who are now working as professional zither musicians or teachers. She shined the beauty of Korean zither at the stage held in Nagoya, Japan 10 years ago and proved her excellence at the Gyeongbuk Fantasy Arirang, a Korean music festival held every year in North Gyeongsang Province. She is also famous for playing along with ‘ye-one-mu’, the traditional dance of Gyeongsan which is her home town every year with her mother. Like it is the case for many talented artists, Baek is a versatile player, actor, dancer and singer. She recorded the Korean folk music only with zither and the album received a positive feedback especially from those who do not know much about the instrument. Zither boasts 1,700 years of history and has been loved by many people noble and common alike. If you are interested in the zither, you are highly encouraged to pay a visit to Sorihyang Gayageum.
