“I will do my best in promoting the rights and interests of the members!”
Lee Jum-chan, President of Daegu Art Association

Lee Jum-chan, President of Daegu Art Association, is a white porcelain artist who received an invitational artist prize from the Nobel Foundation. He served as the vice president of the Korean Fine Arts Association and is a design professor of Kyungil University. Inaugurated as the president of the Daegu Art Association this year, Lee is determined to promote the rights and interests of the 2,200 members of the association during his 4 year term. He is willing to pass down the spirits of renowned modern artists in the region Jeong Jum-sik, Seo Byeong-oh and Lee In-sung and has pledged to build Daegu Modern Art Museum. The association is also planning to build a city museum in accordance with the city’s slogan ‘Colorful Daegu’. When built, the regional artists can have more opportunities to hang their works in the main streets and areas of the city. The association expects that the museum can help artists to be independent and can be a role model for other cities to follow. To secure government fund for local artists, however, he introduced the Daegu Artists Day and is organizing various promotional events such as encouraging local public institutions to buy art works to hang on the wall. For this, Lee is planning to form a task force with which he is determined to achieve his goals by 100% within the term. Building an art road on the Suseong hill like Montmartre in Paris, for example, is one of his goals. Lee explains that the hill and the lake around the area is a perfect spot for artists to promote their works. To meet the demand from the global market today, Lee is planning to secure overseas galleries for the local artists to organize exhibitions abroad. His idea of promoting the members of the association does not stop here: he is working on connecting the local artists to students for an after-school program. Apart from his president’s role, Lee is a renowned white porcelain artist in the region. White porcelain takes a considerable amount of time and effort from choosing the soil to realizing the texture and color. It is remarkable that he has poured his passion in white porcelain for the last 40 years and he is ready to share his knowledge and experience with junior artists in the region. Lee says that artists need to have a pure heart like white porcelain and this is his core philosophy of running the association in harmony between the senior and junior artists.
