“Introducing the world’s first water collecting wells”
Kim Yong-in, President of Jisung Industry Development Co., Ltd.

According to UN report, 1/4 of the whole population on earth is suffering from extreme water shortage. The report also worried that 42% of the whole population will face water shortage around 2050. Korea ranked No.20 among the OECD at WPI (Water Poverty Index) with the 1,277mm average annual rainfall, a 1.6 times above the global average. However, most rainfalls are being flown away to the sea due to the extreme regional and seasonal differences in terms of the amount. It is noteworthy that majority of Koreans live in cities and they rather experience more of flooding than water shortage. The flood damages are reported in summer every year and rainfall storage tanks in cities do not seem to be working at all. In other words, the city dwellers are wasting the drinking water. Hopefully, there is a company who rolled sleeve up to tackle the issue: Jisung Industry Development Co., Ltd.. Jisung Industry Development Co., Ltd. started R&D in eco-friendly waterway-type collecting wells in 2012. The researchers applied the method of ‘releasing after permeation’ to overcome the then existing drainage systems. President Kim explains “The systems could not digest when more 30mm rainfall per hour hits an area. The Eco-Friendly Waterway-Type Colleting Wells is designed to collect surface water, permeated water and saturated water. As a result, the wells can save 15% more water than the existing systems. Each well can save about 1.17 tons of water and releases it gradually hour by hour.” The water saved is second rated and it can play a role to purify the water passages to the downstream. According to Kim, the water released by the Eco-Friendly Waterway-Type Colleting Wells can reduce the amount of ready-mixed concrete up to 94%, steel bar up to 58%, dead earth and soil production up to 56%, CO2 release during construction up to 89% and construction cost up to 63%. The Eco-Friendly Waterway-Type Colleting Wells is known to be the world’s first in its kind and it obtained the Green Technology No.15-00144 and the Green Structural Material No.T030804. In recognition of his achievement, Kim received citations from Prime Minister and Mayor of Gyeonggi Province last year. It is notable that the 5.6 billion won sales in the year 2016 soared to 10 billion won last year. “Many SME with excellent ideas and techniques are suffering from lack of funds especially when it comes to R&D. As President of a small construction company, I strongly feel the need of support from the government.” Meanwhile, Jisung Industry Development Co., Ltd. is ambitious to widen the scope of business to improving overall drainage systems in Korea and on turning the saved water to hydrogen energy.
