“Delivering 518 works of Budda onto canvas!”
Lee Sook-il, artist and Head Director of Museum Hyur

Lee Sook-il, Head Director of Museum Hyur, is the artist who painted the 500 Buddha statues at Eunhae Temple in Yeongcheon City (National Treasure No.14) in the western style painting for the first time in Korea. The work is meaningful for Lee who overcame her fight against the laryngeal cancer: she expressed the teachings of Buddha through the work. Lee says that a work is complete when the artist clears one’s mind before grabbing the brush and being into the state of spiritual enlightenment. “Buddha is everywhere in everything. Painting for me is a spiritual training on which I understand the teachings of Buddha” says Lee. She saw the 500 Buddha statues at Eunhae Temple when she was a teen girl and brewed her plan to deliver them onto canvas one day. But she didn’t want to express the statues as they are. Rather, she wished to express the results of her spiritual training gained through meditation. It was 2000, when she clothed the work with western color and expression with each statue evoking different face and shape. During the 3 years of period, Lee created 518 paintings of Buddha and Lee’s enlightenment is housed at the National Folk Museum of Korea. Lee became a Buddhist during the fight against the cancer. She learned meditation from her teacher Sim Ja-han. Lee explains that her Buddha is at her heart not at the temple. She often cites “Picture is me and me is picture”, the result of living and training herself for 20 years on Palgong Mountain. Lee says that she feels no hunger, trouble or pain when painting the Buddha series which she has carried on for the last 20 years. She delivered her realization expressed in the works from Insa-dong to The Louvre in Paris. She says that everybody can be a Buddha who is consistent in training oneself. In an effort to make contribution to the society with her talent in art, Lee and her daughter Yeo Song-ha opened Museum Hyur where 1,000 works of art themed on owl called ‘hyur’ symbolizing the Buddha are being open to the public. Lee is the head director and Yeo is the curator of the museum. If you are a lover of art, you are highly encouraged to pay a visit to the museum to see the works.
