“Ecuador invites you to the land of never ending spring!”

We all dream of a nice cocktail on a beach in a warm spring or summer every now and then. Some will make their dream come true and some are too busy to make it like us, the many work-loaded Korean people. How about if the year round spring haven also provides the breathtaking Andes mountains with snow on top as backdrop? How about active volcanoes? And also the famous Galapagos Islands where Charles Darwin developed his theory on the Origin of Species? Can these sounds encourage the busy Korean people to put everything behind and head to the never ending spring land for once in life time adventure and relaxation? Oscar Herrera Gilbert, Ecuadorian Ambassador to Korea, says “I know Koreans do love ‘pali-pali’ (faster, faster) and Ecuador perfectly suits the tendency. Ecuador is about 1.5 times of Korea (North/South) in size and you can move around from one place to another within hours. One minute you are in one of many romantic beaches of your choice in the west and another minute you are in one of the cities lined up along the splendid mountain ridges in the east. Ecuador is relatively a small country compared to its neighbors but it has a lot to offer.” It is interesting to know that Mount Cotopaxi in Ecuador is the world’s highest active volcano and actually is higher than Mount Everest if not calculated from the sea level, says Mr. Gilbert. In other words, Ecuador is the closest country to the space and thus farthest from the earth’s center. This is because the Earth is not a perfect sphere but it bulges slightly at the equator. Having said the word ‘equator’, Ecuador is the only country in the world named after the geographical feature. In fact, there is a large monument about 45 minutes away from Quito, the capital, where you can stand in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere: Ciudad Mitad del Mundo. It might be a perfect place to act out an unforgettable scene for yourself or with your lover. Here are some of the must-sees in Ecuador: Galapagos Islands of course come first with the famous iguana and sea lions. The snow covered peak of Cotopaxi, which is clearly visible from Quito, will stop your way and make you ‘wow’ out of your mouth. Frailes Beach along the Pacific Coast will take your breath away with its stunning sky blue sea and San Rafael Waterfall in the Amazon Region, 3 h 43min drive from Quito, will make you feel what ‘magnificence’ truly is about!  Mr. Gilbert said that the Ecuadorian Embassy in Korea is regularly holding various cultural events and festivals in order to share its unique Ecuadorian culture and beautiful landscapes with more Korean people.

“Invest in mining and cosmetics that are highly promising!”

Big names like Hyundai, Kia, Samsung and LG already have made their presence in Ecuador with the first two in cars and the latter two in electronic goods. On the other hand, Ecuador’s shrimp, banana, cocoa, coffee and frozen tuna are the key trades to South Korea while the oil export is the biggest contributor to the national economy of Ecuador as whole. It is notable that Ecuador is the first import country of the Hyundai Pony and is now trying to invite Hyundai ENC alongside SK ENC to join a venture to build refineries in Ecuador since Korea has the advanced technologies in the field. For those Korean SMEs who are in search of overseas markets, Mr. Gilbert says “Invest in Ecuador’s mining and cosmetics industries that are highly promising. Ecuador’s rich minerals are yet to be explored and unknown plants and substances are well hidden in the Amazon for you to find and make them into cosmetics or medicine. Korean cosmetics are globally recognized these days and Korea’s R&D capabilities will certainly make it harvest good fruits if explored. In fact, I would like to jump into the fields if I could have an opportunity after retiring” says Mr. Gilbert. When asked why Ecuador is an ideal investment destination in general, Mr. Gilbert said “Firstly, Ecuador and S. Korea is to sign the SECA (Strategic Economic Cooperation Agreement) by July this year which will be the foundation for reducing the tariff barrier and protecting foreign investments. Secondly, Ecuador is using U.S. dollar as the one single official currency so you don’t need to worry about exchange risks. Thirdly, Ecuador is the closest to Asia among Latin American countries and offers fantastic excess to its neighboring countries which makes the logistics industry more convenient. Lastly, Ecuador runs free economic zones in which you don’t need to pay any tax at all.” For more information on business, culture and tourism, visit or call Ecuadorian Embassy in Seoul, S. Korea. http://coreadelsur.embajada.gob.ec/ 02-739-2401
