“Incheon Port Transportation Union will accelerate advancement of port industry in the city!”
Lee Hae-wu, Leader of Incheon Port Transportation Union

The Port of Incheon first opened in 1883 and has played its role as one of major gates to Korea. It has endured many invasions, wars and poverty that swept the Korean people and it also has been a barometer of the Korean labor movement. The opening of the new port in 2015 laid the foundation for the port to grow as a global logistics depot and last year alone achieved whacking 3 million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) of containers. In the year 2018, the port is expecting to see one single TOC (Terminal Operation Company). Also, 2018 is a very important year for the Incheon Port Transportation Union to implement its New Year policies covering various fields: field-centered management, protecting union member’s rights and interests, launching one single TOC, promoting cooperative management-labor relations, improving work environment, development of inner harbors, relocation of International Ferry Terminal, following government standard for fee ratio and building citizen-friendly union. “We witnessed the collapse of Hanjin Shipping and slowdown of the local port transportation industry last year. But we have a great perspective this year with various projects and we expect that we can be back on the track by working together. Of course there might be difficulties but we are ready to listen to the needs and wants of our members as well as the management and we will achieve it through close cooperation” says determinedly the leader of the Incheon Port Transportation Union Lee Hae-wu. For this, the union has brought up five core tasks in details of the New Year policies: 1) Forming the strong bond between the union members and the management as well as securing safety through regular meetings and workshops. 2) Taking initiative in revising the regulations relating to the rights of laborers. 3) Securing job stability during the process of the TOC. 4) Building cooperative relations between the management and the labor. 5) Promoting social activities. Based on these resolutions, Lee and the members of the union are expecting improvements in 4 basic insurances for all Incheon port transportation labors both permanent and temporary alike, in preventing any irrational requirements and illegal practices, and in running free meal service centers for local residents in need. “The Port of Incheon has played a significant role to make the metropolitan city as it is today. Also, the port is an asset of Incheon citizens. Bearing this in mind, we will do our best to grow the port as a global logistics hub on which we will make a great contribution to both regional and national economies.”
