“We help ranchers reduce cattle waste sting!”

Jo Sung-baek, Director of Cattle Rancher Sting Research Lab

Sting from cattle waste probably is the biggest headache for many cattle ranchers. Not only the stink harasses the neighbors but also increases the level of cattle’s stress which sometimes leads to diseases and death. Cattle Rancher Sting Research Lab has worked on finding the cause of the smell and development of the smell remover products for many years. “The technology of removing the cattle waste sting in Korea is not that impressive despite the ever increasing consumption of meats. It is notable that the existing microorganism smell removers used in most cattle ranchers are not effective as expected” says Director Jo Sung-baek of the lab. Jo worked for the National Institute of Animal Science for a long time during which he poured a considerable amount of time and effort in researching on cattle waste smell removers. He points out the lack of energy needed for growth of microorganism in the waste as the cause of the sting. In other words, the microorganism is used to decompose the organic matter of the smell but the food for the microorganism to survive is not enough. Naturally, Jo’s research is focused on providing energy source for the microorganism. “I’m pushing forward the development with the goal to release the product in May this year. I expect it will reduce the smell by up to 70% or 50% at least depending on the conditions of each cattle rancher.” According to Jo, the characteristics of the smell are affected by the kind of fodders and the level of the facilities also contributes to reducing the smell. This is the reason that the lab also runs various training programs on management of the smell for ranchers. As part of this effort, the lab recently has joined a project carried out in cooperation with regional agro-livestock microorganism innovation centers and related organizations in Jeongeup City. “In fact, smell removers alone cannot solve the issue by 100% but it must be backed up by the support of the government and ranchers. For our part as a research lab, we will keep doing our best in development of better and more effective technique and products.”
