“Say ‘No’ to any injustice and enjoy what you do”
Song Il-sup, Principal of Gusan High School

Gusan High School was founded in 1923. The rich history and tradition have made it one of the top high schools in Korea. The school turned to an autonomous public high school in 2010 and introduced innovative curriculum and teaching methods as well as a close cooperation system with local society. “The school has exerted its utmost effort and strength to promote humanity, leadership and capability of students. Our excellent ‘economy class’ and ‘international economy class’ especially are playing a significant role to increase student’s global awareness and knowledge” says Song Il-sup, Principal of Gusan High School. It is also notable that the school invites renowned guest lecturers in each field for students to widen their eyes to various fields that are not yet explored. Last year in particular invited history professor Oh Hyang-nyeong who wrote <Archiving> and he gave his insight in humanity for students. Meanwhile, the school’s reading programs such as ‘Reading Experience Class’, ‘Reading A Hundred Books’ and ’Great Book 33’ are praised for raising student’s reading, thinking and writing ability. When the principal Song took the steering wheel of the school, he put up a slogan ‘Enjoy & Reject’ with intention to promote positive and proactive attitudes of students. He brought up this slogan by observing the Sewol disaster in 2014 and the Choi Soon-sil’s manipulation of the government affairs in 2016. “Students must learn to say ‘No’ to any injustice and to fight against it. And this attitude is not only about being fair and just but also about raising their self-respect and pride.” In addition, Song emphasizes on ‘communication and cooperation’ in all affairs taken place in school whether it is classroom, teacher’s room or clubbing. “Accumulating knowledge is important. What is more important however is accumulating their ability in communication and cooperation. One cannot live alone in this world and students had better know how to communicate and how to cooperate if they want to lead a successful social life either at work or home after graduation.” Currently, there are about 100 clubbing activities in the school according to each preference of a group through which students build their ability in autonomy and independence. Note: <Power Korea> “rewrites” the Korean article in English “concisely” for native English speakers and staff of foreign missions in Korea.
