“Spreading Buddha’s benevolence and love to people”
Yeonsu, Chief Monk of Bongseo Temple

Bongseo Temple is located between Jeongnamsan Mountain and Seobangsan Mountain in Wanju County. It was established in 727 and a great Buddhist priest Jinmook stayed and spread teachings of Buddha during the King Sunjo of Joseon Dynasty. Jinmook practiced filial piety, friendship and intensive pray for the people especially devastated by the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. However, not only a big Buddhist priest such as Jinmook shared the time with the temple but also historically famous Buddhist priests like Haechulgooksa, Jingamgooksa, Bosogooksa and Naongsunsa stayed and spread the teachings of Buddha to the people. “Bongseo Temple is still passing down the tradition and devotion of Jinmook today. A story goes that prayers witnessed the liquor in a bowl was reduced to half at a ritual for the mountain spirit. Surprised by the phenomenon, they prayed harder and the words were spread far and wide which came back with continuous flows of visitors” says Yeonsu. Most part of the temple was destroyed by the fire during the Korean War in early 50s but monks and believers raised a fund to reshape the temple as today. “It is worrying that the number of Buddhists is decreasing nowadays. I ascribe the reason to out-of-date practice and lack of social participation. Buddhism is a religion about now, right this moment or today. It means that new practice and prayer methods must continuously be introduced and applied time to time. In Buddhism, it depends on individual to search for right understanding about every phenomenon in a way to reach enlightenment. It is really hard to empty all of our desire and greedy but trying to reduce the level, trying to be generous to others and trying to forgive others and being forgiven I think is an effective way of practice.” When asked about future plan, Yeonsu said “As the chief monk of Bongseo Temple, I will promote social participation, spread mutual respect and cooperation and grow a warm heart for sharing and love in a way to create a better society and the world we are coexisting in.”
