전통적인 한국의 곡창지대인 전북에서는 지역특산물을 활용한 바이오산업육성프로젝트가 활발히 진행 중이다. 쌀, 콩, 차 재배로 유명한 전북에 터를 잡아, 발효과학 바이오산업 연구에 매진해 유산균과 효소 중심의 건강식품을 개발하는 제너럴네이처(주)는 국가식품클러스터 및 농공단지 투자협약을 바탕으로 성장해 새로운 기능성 식품인 GN바이오틱스랩 시리즈를 출시했다. 수출 지향기업으로 성장하는 제너럴네이처(주)의 백진수 대표로부터 국내외 우수연구기관과 함께 유익한 식물 원료를 소재로 진행하는 연구의 가치와 성과에 대해 직접 들어보았다.

전북 전주시와 함께 성장한 바이오소재 R&D전문 기능성식품 제조전문기업
2014년 7월, 농산물발효기술 인프라를 갖춘 전북에서도 주목할 기술력을 지닌 미생물발효전문 기업이 창립됐다. 바이오소재 연구 및 지역 농산물의 장점을 활용한 R&D중심의 기능성식품 전문기업 제너럴네이처(주)는 발효쌀가루 및 곡물을 유산균과 혼합 발효시키고, 식물성유산균과 청국장균을 동시에 배양시킨 한국형 건강식품을 개발하는 회사다. 제너럴네이처(주)의 백진수 대표는 총자본금 1억 원으로 출발했으며 완제품이 출시되기 전 신용과 기술력만으로도 지자체의 검증을 통과해 지원을 받은 바 있다. 또한 백 대표는 전북 순창군 생물산업진흥원의 창업보육센터로 이전하고, 전문연구진과 현대인의 식생활에 맞는 발효과학 중심의 제품개발에 충실한 결과 2017년에는 총자본금 6억 원의 규모로 성장했다. 백 대표는 지난 창업 3년간 (재)전주농생명소재연구원과 기능성소재 R&D 및 사업화를 위한 업무협약, 순창군과 쌍암농공단지 내 생산시설 구축 및 발효미생물 사업을 위한 업무협약에 이어 지역 농인회사법인과 상호공동연구 및 신규제품개발 업무협약을 각각 체결하고, (재)발효미생물산업진흥원과 공동연구 및 발효미생물 활용제품개발 상호업무협약에 따라 G시리즈와 순창콩청국장환 등을 OEM으로 판매해 왔다. 또한 홍콩기업에 3천만 원의 규모로 수출한 장생시효소 등을 출시한 제너럴네이처(주)는 2015년 전주시, 그리고 순창군과 2건의 투자협약을 맺고, 농업기술실용화재단과의 발효쌀가루 제조기술이전을 비롯해 프로바이오틱스 및 기능성소재에 대한 4건의 기술이전을 이루었다. 2016년 기술보증기금의 벤처기업으로 인증되고, 순창군에 기업부설연구소를 설립해 발효미생물에 대한 자체연구개발이 가능해졌다는 백 대표는 2016년에는 ‘퍼스트펭귄 창업’에 선정되고 발효식품엑스포 농식품부장관상 수상 및 농림축산식품부 농공상융합형 중소기업에 선정되기도 했다. 지난 10월에는 IFFE 국제발효식품엑스포 지정 우수상품 기업으로서, 전북도지사상을 수상하는 성과를 거둔 백 대표는 특허 및 상표등록 총 7건을 보유하며 식품전문회사로서는 드물게 지역과 기업이 협력하여 동반 성장하는 이상적인 표본임을 입증하고 있다. 

맛과 소화흡수율이 월등히 달라진 GN바이오틱스랩 3종으로 국내와 세계시장 진출
백 대표는 기존의 유산균과 다른 곡물혼합 발효유산균으로 지역 친환경농업과 상생할 수 있는 특화제품을 만들어냈다고 한다. 백 대표는 농진청에서 개발했으며 미네랄이 3배 이상, 식이섬유가 5배 이상으로 증가한 고아미4호 쌀을 창업아이템으로 점찍고 친환경재배농가와 협력해, 곡물가루, 식물성유산균 및 청국장발효균과 결합한 새로운 유산균효소 건강식품을 출시했다. 백 대표는 이 제품들이 통곡물에서 증식한 락토바실러스 플란타룸, 페디오코커스 에시디락타시를 함유하고 있으며, 수분비율 3-5% 이내로 건조시켜 고가의 유산균효소 건강식품계에서 드물게 3만 원 후반대로 한 달 동안 섭취할 수 있는 과립분말 형으로 만들었다고 한다. 백 대표가 가장 심혈을 기울인 제품은 미네랄 쌀인 고아미4호로 만든 GN바이오틱스랩 통곡물 유산균 G1이다. 7가지 통곡물에서 증식한 유산균과 비타민 B,K군을 풍부하게 함유하고 천연항생물질과 소화효소가 생성되는 이 제품은 섭취가 간편하고 장에서의 소화흡수를 도와준다. 또한 GN바이오틱스랩 쾌변 유산균 G2는 청국장콩 백태로 만든 유산균발효청국장분말을 7대 3의 비율로 함유했는데, 식물성유산균과 청국장균을 동시에 배양시키고 24시간동안 발효시켜, 면역력 증가와 항산화효과가 있으며 레시틴과 나토키나제가 피부노화와 혈관계 성인병을 예방한다. 세 번째 제품인 GN바이오틱스랩 효소 유산균 G3은 백태와 고아미4호를 5대 5 비율로 증자하고 발효시킨 제품으로서, 소화력이 떨어지는 환자, 고령층을 위해 단백질과 탄수화물 분해를 촉진하는 성분을 함유해 배변과 소화기능을 돕는 작용을 한다. 이렇게 고아미와 백태를 혼합한 제품을 주력상품으로 개발한 제너럴네이처(주)는 현재 전국 5개 총판 마케팅으로 판매되며, 오프라인매장으로 부천 동인당약국, 강남메디팜 정연약국 등에 이어 내년부터는 해외 시장을 개척하고 글로벌 건강식품브랜드로 성장시킬 초석을 닦을 예정이다. (재)발효미생물산업진흥원과의 바이오컨버젼기술기반 기술혁신형 전북 바이오산업육성 프로젝트이자 2019년까지 진행하는 ‘풀뿌리기업 지원사업’의 R&D기업으로 선정된 백 대표는, 앞으로 고용과 실업문제 해결만큼 중요한 문제가 대기업 아래에서 적자를 감수하는 중소기업을 위한 제도적 지원이라고 전한다. 또한 궤도에 오른 벤처기업가로서 백 대표는 업계가 창업 2-3년 후 맞이하는 ‘데스밸리’를 극복하기 위해서는, 벤처기업 투자를 독려하는 국가의 금융시스템이 더 많이 도입되기를 바란다고 밝혔다. 

Natural Korean fermented health functional food keeps you rolling the day

General Nature is a company specialized in R&D for fermentation science and bio technology. Since its establishment in July 2014, the company has spread its excellence in introducing lactobacillus and enzyme-inspired health functional food of which the ‘GN Bioticlab Series’ most outstanding. The researchers of the company use fermented rice powder and grains to mix with lactobacillus and cultivate the beneficial bacteria of vegetable lactobacillus and fast-fermented bean paste. CEO Baek Jin-su of General Nature started the business with only 100 million won (USD$910,000) initial capital but his capability and proven technique were already widely recognized. He ardently pushed forward his passion in fermented food during which he moved his base to a Business Incubator of the Jeonnam Bioindustry Foundation and eventually grew the company worth 600 million won as of 2017 through innovative development of Korean technology-driven fermented food. The growth of the business has also brought a number of contracts with the Jeonju Agrobio-Materials Institute for functional materials and R&D, with Sunchang County for building production facilities in the Ssangam Agro-Industrial Complex, and with the Microbial Institute for Fermentation Industry for joint research. The latter cooperation actually brought a result of introducing the G-Series and Sunchang Fermented Bean Pills. Also, the company exported ‘Jangsangsi Enzyme’ worth 30 million won to a company based in Hong Kong and drew two more investment contracts from Jeonju City and Sunchang County in 2015 as well as 4 cases of technology transfer on pro-biotics and functional materials with the Foundation of AG Tech Communication and Transfer. In 2016, the company was approved as a venture enterprise by the Korea Technology Finance Corporation and opened an affiliated research center of the county. Also in the same year, General Nature received a ministerial prize from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and was chosen for the agro-industrial SME by the same ministry. Last October, the company received a yet another prize from Governor of North Jeolla Province for being appointed as an excellent SME at the International Fermented Food Expo. As a result, the company has obtained 7 cases of patents and registration of trade marks. Various kinds of grain powders, vegetable lactobacillus and Korean fermented bean pastes are well known health functional food that have made a great contribution to bringing these successes to the company. Baek explains that these products contain lactobacillus plantarum and pediococcus acidilactici and the specialists of the company dried them up within the 3 to 5% water ratio. But what is more attractive for consumer’s point of view is that these high profile lactobacillus products are sold only around 30,000 won with easy intake of granule or powder. ‘Goami 4’ (the GN Bioticlab Series) especially is ‘lactobacillus G1’, he points out. It contains rich lactobacillus, vitamin K and Mg, which proliferated from 7 kinds of whole-grains, and it produces natural antibiotics and digestive enzymes. The ‘bactobacillus G2’, on the other hand, is made of white corvania of fast-fermented beans mixed with the powder at the 7:3 ratio. It strengthens immunity and anti-skin aging and prevents vascular diseases. Lastly, the ‘lactobacillus G3’ is made by mixing corvania and Goami 4 in the 5:5 ratio and is good for digestion and bowel movement. For the year 2018, CEO Baek keeps himself busy laying the foundation to pioneer oversea markets.
