“Leading Korea’s digital image processing technology”
Choi Tae-Sun, Professor of Signal and Image Processing Lab of School of Mechatronics at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology

Choi and his team are working on technology development that can measure precise three-dimensional information by extracting the focusing information gained through imaging device without physical touch to the subject. “Most existing precision measurement technologies heavily depend on ‘interferometer’ or ‘laser’. But the technologies are monopolized by the USA and Japan and Korean companies have to spend sums of money at purchasing the equipment” says Choi. So, he and his team focused on CCD (Charge Coupled Device) camera. It changes the light from the lens to electric signals and is relatively cheaper than the interferometer or laser- based equipment. This was the reason that the team has carried on its R&D for non-touched measuring technology. The problems are the ‘stereo’ and ‘shading’ methods lack in precision and the ‘focus’ method also has difficulty to measure when the subject doesn’t have enough surface patterns. This was another reason for the team to have been working on developing FIS (Focused Image Surface) search methods as well as optical system vibration reduction technology and high speed processing technology that can eventually lead to high value added digital microscope. The team predicts that these technologies can be used as core technologies for PDP, LCD and semiconductor. In addition, the team is working on development of ‘satellite imaging multi-censor adjustment and convergence technology’ as well as ‘medical computer imaging diagnosis technology’. The former is expected to be used for planning urban development, mountain fire detecting and monitoring disaster-stricken areas. The latter, carried out in cooperation with Chonnam National University Hospital, is expected to be used for X-ray, CT and MRI. Professor Choi is received as a veteran in image processing and machine vision and has published about 340 papers in academic journals home and abroad. He registered 18 patents and became a permanent member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology last year. In 2000, he received the ‘Third Millennium Medal’ from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and in 2003 the Haedong Prize from the Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers and in 2009 the Excellent Researcher Prize from the Korean Institute of Information Technology. “I think it is very important for researchers to push forward one’s task till the end. I will keep doing my best to make contribution to my field.”
